UK Vogue October 2011 : Adele by Sølve Sundsbø

Quote:
ADELE is the cover star of the October Englishwoman issue of Vogue. A celebration of all that has come to define the modern English woman, the magazine profiles some of the country's most successful and completely unique female names - from author Diana Athill and Wendi Murdoch to Amy Childs.

"Our cover girl, Adele, has won over the world with her heartbreaking voice and her ability to seem as if she very much herself," says Alexandra Shulman in her editor's letter. "One of the interesting facts of celebrity is that we, the admirers, usually find some particular aspect of our favourite stars to focus on and the generally that becomes 'the point of them'. We like them to be a certain way, and often take a long time to accept any change. So Adele's very normality, her down-to-earth determination not to compromise herself, has become as much a part of her USP as, for example, Madonna's constant, deliberate reinvention."

Interviewed by Christa D'Souza, the award-winning singer talks about her career, style and why, if she was the face of anything "it should be full-fat Coke!".

The October issue of Vogue is available from Thursday September 8.

While many young singers are obsessed with staying slim there is one star that makes no apology for her fuller figure.

And in a revealing interview singing sensation Adele says she is happy just the way she is and her voluptuous shape has never been an issue.

Speaking to Vogue the 23-year-old who also posed for a series of stunning portraits said: ‘I enjoy being me; I always have done.’

‘I’ve seen people where it rules their lives, you know, who want to be thinner or have bigger boobs, and how it wears them down. And I just don’t want that in my life.’

And it seems the people she surrounds herself with ensure she maintains a positive self-image.

She explained: ‘It’s just never been an issue – at least, I’ve never hung out with the sort of horrible people who make it an issue. I have insecurities of course, but I don’t hang out with anyone who points them out to me.'

Adele, who was forced to cancel the first two dates of her U.K. tour yesterday because of a severe cold and chest infection, has also revealed why you won’t see her as the face of a brand anytime soon, no matter how high the offer is.

She told the magazine: ‘I don’t want to see me plastered everywhere, before adding ‘If they offered me £10million, I’d be like f*** off. Besides if I was going to be the face of anything it should be the face of full-fat coke.’

Adele’s star just keeps on rising her second album 21 has sold over 3.5million copies and broke the solo female artist record for staying at number one for eleven weeks.

But while she is currently in higher demand than ever the singer has been forced to cancel the first two dates of her U.K. tour because of ill health.

In a blog post to her website she explained: ‘im as useless as a slug right now, ive had a rotten cold,’ before adding: ‘id rather not do a show, then not do a good one for you. (sic)

Adele is scheduled to perform in Cardiff on Wednesday.

Adele hits the red carpet for the 2011 Barclaycard Mercury Prize at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Tuesday (September 6) in London, England.

The 23-year-old entertainer made the shortlist for one of the best UK records of 2011 for her hit album 21.

“Much of the music here evokes a sense of place and time, providing a wonderful snapshot,” said one of the judges for the prize of Adele’s album.

Adele's 21 has sold 10 million copies worldwide!!!

Quote:
Ten million and counting for the unstoppable Adele

Adele’s 21 has underlined its status as one of the most successful albums this century after selling its 10-millionth copy this week.

The album, by far and away 2011’s top seller worldwide, has taken little more than seven months since release to break the 10 million mark and looks likely to reach 13 million sales by the end of the year.

At a time when even the biggest albums globally struggle to sell more than 5 million copies in a calendar year, the XL album’s performance has been remarkable. And the story does not end there with 21 on course to reach 3 million UK sales this week in record-breaking time.

“It’s just phenomenal,” said her manager Jonathan Dickins. “We knew we had a good record and privately we had some targets, but you can’t legislate for this.”

“We’ve taken the whole thing very much one step at a time, but no one could have anticipated this,” added XL Recordings managing director Ben Beardsworth, who noted the album was this week enjoying one of its best weeks in a number of territories, including the US where 21’s sales were expected to rise week-on-week by around 70% following Adele’s MTV VMAs performance of Someone Like You.

The scale and speed of 21’s success can be put into context when lined up alongside the biggest global sellers of recent years. Eminem’s Interscope album Recovery was recognised by the IFPI as 2010’s top worldwide album having sold 5.7 million copies by year’s end and Syco artist Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed A Dream led 2009’s listings after selling around 6.0 million copies (it achieved that despite having only been released in mid-November that year).

Not since Blue Note/EMI’s Norah Jones debut Come Away With Me, which was 2003’s top global seller, has there been a release to dwarf the kind of numbers 21 has been doing.

Adele’s rapid march to 10 million has been achieved because her album became a substantial hit in almost every major music territory.

It has been number one in 19 countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany and the US, where it is the year-to-date’s top album by some distance, it sold its three-millionth copy there last month, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

It is also the first album by a British artist to reach this landmark in the States since Boyle’s debut two years ago.

Unless something extraordinary happens during the last four months of 2011, 21’s success will also mean the top-selling artist album globally will be by a British artist for the fourth time in five years following Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black (2007), Coldplay’s Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends (2008) and Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed A Dream (2009).

Meanwhile, in the UK 21’s sales reached 2.98 million units last week, according to the Official Charts Company, and are set to hit 3 million by the end of the week.

Sales this week were strengthened by Adele’s appearance on Jonathan Ross’s new ITV1 chat show where she performed Turning Tables. However, she had to pull out of the first two dates of her UK tour last Sunday and Monday because of illness.

Given the album firmly remains a Top 10 fixture in the UK, US and other key markets, there are likely to be plenty more sales to come before the year is up.

“The joy of an album coming out in January is we’ve had the whole year so far of great sales and we’ve still got our first Christmas to come,” said Beardsworth.

“I imagine even for a record that has sold at this volume there are going to be some great sales at Christmas.”

I am so happy for her. She totally deserves it! I can see it selling up to 15 million.

She’s experienced meteoric success thanks to her latest album 21, and now it seems Adele may have been invited to sing the new James Bond theme song.

Though nothing has been made official, the “Chasing Pavements” songstress hinted at the gig during a recent inverview.

Adele told press that she hasn’t written a song since May, though she will be going to the studio to write and record “one song,” a “theme” in November.

The new James Bond film isn’t due to hit theaters until November of 2012, so we may have to wait awhile to hear Adele’s voice teamed with the spy series.

Chart-topping star Adele halted a show to ensure a fan was given medical help.

The singer, performing at London's HMV Hammersmith Apollo, stopped the show to allow medics to treat a fan who had fainted.

Adele, who cancelled several shows following her own health problems, was worried about a commotion in the stalls at the start of her song Rumour Has It last night.

The Someone Like You star asked the crowd: 'Has someone fainted?'

After she was met with murmurs confirming the incident, she cried 'medic' into her microphone, before walking to the front of the stage.

Adele stared into the stalls and waited, looking concerned, then asked members of the audience to 'stand aside' to allow staff to reach the fan who had been taken ill.

After help arrived, she returned to centre stage and tried to make light of the situation as she told fans: 'That's proper rock'n'roll.'

Adele, who has sold three million copies of her latest album 21 so far this year, resumed her tour last week after the cancellations caused by her chest problems.

She is due to perform at the Apollo again tonight and then London's Royal Albert Hall on Thursday.

The singing sensation postponed two shows earlier this month after contracting a serious chest infection.

But she is fighting fit again and following her tour is heading back to the studio to record new material believed to be the new James Bond theme.

Adele hinted at the rumours during a recent interview with Jonathan Ross.

The chat show host asked the singer what she was working on next when Adele dropped the suggestion.

She said: ‘I’m going back in the studio in November. Fingers crossed.’

When Jonathan, 50, asked what she was preparing she said: ‘Well, this is actually a theme, what I’ve got to do. Wow, that’s really giving something away.’

Ross queried: ‘A theme?’

He then began humming the James Bond theme tune and backtracking Adele was seen blushing and covering her mouth before saying: ‘No, It’s a concept.’
