I know! I can't stand the Manfred Mann version. It is so tinny and 60s sounding. Is that the version you meant most people knew?

Yes! Everyone seems to love the Manfred Mann version and I always say, 'this is a Bruce Springsteen song, haven't you ever heard it?" and people have no idea what I'm talking about! :p

Welcome Meg! Another Boss fan!

Yay MEG! Nice to see you here. I was just about to joke that this was mine and Polly's private thread. I wonder why he doesn't have that retro cool that Dylan and co have? I guess it was the 80s superstardom? In the UK not many people are into him. In the US is it a case of every middle aged man being into him Polly? That must significantly dampen the cool factor!

^yes! Pretty much every single guy aged 40 to 60 love him! I know my Dad does! I agree - I don't know why he doesn't seem to have that retro cool...probably because he was so big in the 80s I guess. He is definately an American icon though - I think lots of people only know the big hits like "Born in the USA" and "Born to Run" and they don't look much further than that. I don't know. I know I am the only person I know my age who loves him!

I love the way he is so American but can criticise American policy without compromising his Americaness. The criticism is not aggressive, it is just ...dissapointed and sad. More people should take a leaf out of his book.

Oh for other 1970s fans... Dazed and Confused is like the best film ever. Conveys the aesthetic and the fashion as well as the sense of stasis that made kids feel so frustrated and make world changing music.

YAY I have another friend on TFS. Paper Champion I know you are new but PLEASE stick around And you are in the UK. Do you know how NOBODY I know likes Bruce in this country? I think I might emigrate to the States just so I don't feel like a freak of an outsider.
