DM a version of Joy Division? I think they are one of the few who can have any claims on originality of sound and production....
I said there's a lot of crap between the good stuff on their albums, which is why I prefer their best of collection.

I'm not saying that they copied Joy Division, or vice versa, just that they have a similar sound -- which is pretty obvious. I can't help but compare them and personally I find Joy Division to have more depth, but I like both.

You can never imagine what you'll see if you haven't seen them in concert!!!! Not just by listening to their albums.... They are one of the best bands I've seen live (and I've seen too many ).... Once you catch them live you will realise why they are one of the biggest, greatest bands rocking our days! THEY F******G ROCK! Go see them and let us know!!!!

(I'm flying to London next April just for them!)
Well, I've seen them twice before, and I am a little turned off by the fact that now there are only three of them. I really like as much un-synthesized stuff as possible, and not having Alan Wilder on the drums is a big hole. I hate drum machines...

Agree with Soft, Dave Gahan is incredibly charismatic on stage, but... he is getting older

"death is everywhere...there are flys on the windscreen"...

...

*...that is the last relevant album imo...
it all went downhill from there...
you got a good one...

but i REALLY recommend 'catching up with depeche mode...'
nothing like it in this world...
you could also check out 'people are people' because it has 'everything counts' which is a phenomenal song...

One of my favourite songs is In your Room, on the Songs of Faith & Devotion album - which I think it's a very good start for someone unfamiliar to their sound.cIf you missed the 80's it might be hard to apprecizte all those synths and electronica

I also think Violator is the best DM album as a whole. It shifted to more personal perspective rather than a social one, inward vs. outward if you will.

Some of the songs on it are

Personal Jesus
Enjoy the Silence
World in My Eyes
Policy of Truth

right...well the social aspect is what i thought made them brilliant...
lots of bands and singers whine about themselves....
the social conscience is what set them apart for me...

otherwise they become 'the smiths'...
oh woe is me.......

**notice...that is also when dave gahan went spiralling down in to depression and tried vigorously to kill himself...

i am a happy goth...
i still have hope for humanity...

...:p

How early are you actually talking,Softie? Music for the Masses come out in '87 two years before Violator. So that's probably one of their later releases. Actually, both those records,I realised, were a complete different sound to the previous releases. Less like their earliest attempts, the dramatic atmosphere was more emphatic.

well scott...

black celebration came out in '85 i think...so everything before that...
'basically...
before they went mainstream and before anyone really ever heard of them because they weren't being played on the radio in most places...they were a very underground band being played mostly in new wave dance clubs like the saint and the world and pyramid in nyc...
during a time when androgyny ruled and sexuality was secondary...
everyone was equal...
it was a time when you actually believed you could change the world into a better place for everyone...
and these songs spoke to that...as well as personal issues...
it's really good stuff...
very passionate and strong...
definitley dark...but with a ray of light...

:p
