I voted for Tupac, but I like Biggie also. I really like Common, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Dead Prez, Jay Z, and Nas. Eminem is ok, he's clever, but I'd like to hear more from him.

bring it back girl! rakim! kool moe dee! and melle mel!

i don't know what happened to eminem. his first album, infinite, showed so much promise. i remember going to see him at battles back in '96-'97... now he comes out with a handful of half hits.

speaking of white emcees. the new r.a. the rugged man is pretty tight.

I vote for Killer Kela (from the UK). I'm not sure if he's really a rapper...he's more of a beat box/singer guy.Watched him live and it was amazing!

Hmm...this is a tough question for me. Dr. Dre should NOT be on that list though...as a rapper he isn't even up for contention, but I'd say he's probably the greatest producer of all time, dude is the Quincy Jones of hip hop. Doggystyle is my favorite album, PERIOD, but I wouldn't say Snoop is my favorite rapper as he's never gone back to the level he was on in 93 (R&G is an enjoyable album though). My favorite rapper is probably 2Pac or Jay-Z, favorite rap group is Outkast (I like the "Hey Ya"/"Way You Move" Outkast but Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik Outkast is musical perfection, people who just got into them NEED to check out their first 3 albums, especially their first one which is when they were at their peak IMO).

dre is definitely up there as far as producers go. there's a lot of other out there like jay dee, dj premier, timbaland, 9th wonder, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, alchemist... the list goes on.

agreed, outkast definitely came correct on almost every album they released. ATLiens!

Wow, that's not exactly an elaborate list. Definitely not one that represents a global scope of 'hip-hop'. For me, even though I don't listen to much hip-hop nowadays, over the years I've always tended to lean towards the underground.
Artists that come to mind from over the years would be;

Freestyle Fellowship
Company Flow
The Roots
De La Soul
Jurassic Five
Black Moon
The Pharcyde
Aesop Rock
Afu Ra
The Artifacts
Smif n Wessun
The Alcoholiks
Masta Ace
The Hieroglyphics crew(Del, Souls, Casual, etc...)
Das Efx
EPMD
Jungle Bros.
Common (Sense)
Rass Kass
Bush Babies
Planet Asia
UMC's - (HA!)
Black Eyed Peas
Cannibal Ox
The Gravediggaz
A Tribe Called Quest

The list could go on I'm sure, but these are the few that immediately came to mind. Although some of these groups have become more socially acceptable, and are enjoying mainstream success, their roots are definitely in the underground, and the overall structure of their music remains so.
