Actually, they're intelligent and experienced more than lucky. This sort of thing has happened to them more than once before. Most of their infrastructure and multi-story structures are very well "quake-proofed". In addition they have leading technology in shock absorption and evacuation procedures. I guess it comes with experience. Of course it's the things that money CAN'T replace that we should be worrying about.

Just reading through this thread and found this... Maybe the world IS ending in 2012 after all?

I truly believe that December 21st, 2012 will be a significant day.
Not because I'd think the world will end, but thousands and I mean thousands of people will feel incredibly disappointed with all their beliefs crashed. This might even result in many people going mad but only because they chose to believe so and not because there will be any actual cataclysmic/nature disasters.

As for world end in general, I don't see why not.
Everything has a start and everything has an end, universe had a start (for e.g. the big bang theory) and there are many theories how it will end. Sun with its solar system, which we are a part of, had a beginning and it is certain that in a veeeeeeeeeeeeeery distant future our sun will make a big boom and then, surely, earth as a planet will be gone. The point is, this all is still so, so, sooooooooooooooooo far away that our generation really shouldn't worry about it.
As for the pollution problem, I don't think it can be seen as 'word end' issue, I mean even if the planet will become impossible to live for humans, it is almost certain that other species of animals will be able to survive (needless to say, word cockroach pops into the head). Don't forget that even though we're currently the most powerful species on the planet, we're still just another species.

The only way I see humanity causing actual world end would be with the nuclear war but we live in the 21st century, I am naive enough to believe that intelligence is slowly overpowering blind belief in... you know, whatever delusions cause war.

I have some figures for you - the worldwide mortality rate for earthquakes during the 1970s alone, I'm sure someone can add up all these figures to mean something spooky and mystical, rather than a stark reminder of just how fragile human life has always been on the face of the planet. You'd especially have thought the end of the world was upon us in 1976, and add to that, there were concerns about oil, terrorism around the world, and growing unrest in some Muslim countries:

Quote:
1978 09 16 - Iran - M 7.8 Fatalities 15,000
1977 03 04 - Romania - M 7.2 Fatalities 1,500
1976 11 24 - Turkey-Iran border region - M 7.3 Fatalities 5,000
1976 08 16 - Mindanao, Philippines - M 7.9 Fatalities 8,000
1976 07 27 - Tangshan, China - M 7.5 Fatalities 255,000
1976 06 25 - Papua, Indonesia - M 7.1 Fatalities 5,000
1976 05 06 - Northeastern Italy - M 6.5 Fatalities 1,000
1976 02 04 - Guatemala - M 7.5 Fatalities 23,000
1975 09 06 - Turkey - M 6.7 Fatalities 2,000
1975 02 04 - Haicheng, China - M 7.0 Fatalities 2,000
1974 12 28 - Northern Pakistan - M 6.2 Fatalities 5,300
1974 05 10 - China - M 6.8 Fatalities 20,000
1972 12 23 - Nicaragua - M 6.2 Fatalities 5,000
1972 04 10 - southern Iran - M 7.1 Fatalities 5,054
1971 05 22 - Eastern Turkey - M 6.9 Fatalities 1,000
1970 05 31 - Chimbote, Peru - M 7.9 Fatalities 66,000
1970 03 28 - Gediz, Turkey - M 6.9 Fatalities 1,086
1970 01 04 - Yunnan Province, China - M 7.5 Fatalities 10,000
It seems the real change is the immediacy by which news of disasters can reach us, the painful and detailed awareness we can now have of their effect, rather than the frequency by which they happen.

Maybe you could combine the both, with someone making the earth move for you while on holiday in France.

^ tigerrouge -

Surely, if you answer "yes" to the first question posed in this thread the second part becomes obsolete?

If Isaac Newton's end-time prediction is for 2060, then we'll probably have to wait a few decades before we see what sort of mad cult grows around him, although given that he based his notions on the Bible, his source material might not be obscure enough to truly appeal to people.
Source, please

Isaac was an interesting guy & far from orthodox. This is the first I've heard of his predicting the end of the world though

That's not to say that, if it were found to be true, people couldn't try to harness this as a tool (or weapon). But in this case, I find the motive for attacking Japan to be... missing completely. Ditto NZ, Chile, Haiti...
No doubt ... I have zero time budgeted for reading about conspiracy theories, but if we could do this, clearly these would not be the targets ... I would imagine Japan and New Zealand top the not-a-threat list ...
