I suppose... but neither of them won an Oscar... or any other prestigious industry award for that matter.

I see what he's getting at, but this sort of thing all comes down to the individual. There are child stars that turned out fine. There are those that didn't.
I don't think the end result has anything to do with an single event, like an award, but more with the overall support system.
REAL support.. meaning being truthful with the child and having it's best interest in mind.

Yeah, my local newspaper wrote a short article about this, but they didn't even bother to mention WHY Arkin didn't want her to win (wanting her to enjoy her childhood). It just made it sound like he was a bitter old man who didn't want a young kid to win

I think that age shouldn't really be a factor. I mean, Abigail, although very young, is still a much better actress than older girls like Lohan, Hilarry Duff, etc. In my opinion she deserved the nomination and shouldn't be left out just because of her age.

On the other hand, I can see what Alan Arkin meant and I think he just wanted what was best for her.

I think age limit could be good. Fame really messes up children's heads. They don't really need all those career prizes. It's ok if you act, but you should also have time to play and go to school. There's enough time for big-time acting when you are an adult.

I'd agree with that, because Tatum became a hot mess later on in life.

I've loved Alan Arkin since he terrorized Audrey Hepburn in Wait Until Dark. No matter how many times I've seen it, I scream my head off when he comes at her like a flying squirrel.

Kudos to him for speaking his mind, and having such a thoughtful opinion.
