(People.com)
Sunday night, R&B's hottest couple, Chris Brown and Rihanna, were supposed to light up the Grammys.

Instead, the normally affectionate twosome were embroiled in a domestic violence drama that left Brown, 19, booked on felony criminal threats charges and posting $50,000 bail after turning himself in to the LAPD on Sunday at 6:34 p.m. PST.

Sources say that Rihanna (real name: Robin Fenty), 20, was the victim in the alleged assault which occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. Responding to a 911 call about a disturbance, the LAPD took statements from a female with visible injuries, who named Brown as her attacker.

Just hours after the incident, witnesses spotted Brown and Rihanna leaving the London Hotel together around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Later that evening, during the Grammy telecast for which both Brown and Rihanna were no-shows, bodyguards for the couple were seen moving their luggage out of the London.

The ramifications of Brown's arrest? Already charged with making criminal threats – defined in part as a situation where the victim "is in fear for [his/her] life" – the R&B singer may face additional charges at the discretion of L.A.'s district attorney's office.

To help him face the legal storm, Brown has hired attorney Mark Geragos, best known for defending convicted murderer Scott Peterson, Winona Ryder after a 2001 shoplifting arrest and Michael Jackson during his child molestation trial.

An R&B Romance Turned Sour?

Rumored to be a couple towards the end of 2007, the singers were first photographed at the Grammys on Feb. 10, 2008. Often coy about their yearlong relationship, the two consistently refused to talk about their romance during interviews.

But the pair offered up other signs of their closeness, from matching star tattoos on their necks to holding hands and kissing at concerts.

Even at the Clive Davis party at the Beverly Hills Hilton on Saturday night, Brown and Rihanna looked cozy and happy.

But over recent weeks, they seemed to have hit a bumpy patch in their relationship.

"They've been fighting a lot lately," a source told PEOPLE. "Lots of ups and downs. One second they're all lovey dovey and then they're fighting like crazy. They're both pretty stubborn."

bite marks??!! Looks like we have a budding Mike Tyson on our hands
As far as the R.Kelly comparison, Chris Brown is in load more trouble as far as public image goes. Chris Brown is a teeny bopper icon who sings LOVE songs... After an incident like this, how could you redeem you image? The whole "I love you girl" schtick is over if all of this turns for the worse. With R. Kelly, he didn't beat anyone, of course what he did is just as wrong and sick, but he could still sing love songs even though I would think the object of his love songs are questionable. I think they both messed up big time, but Chris brown may have done more damage to his career than r. kelly has. If his fans are able to stand by him after hitting a woman, then they're pretty sick in the heads too.

I don't think beating a woman is worse than child pornography. for me it's almost on the same level. a very low level. with child pornography a little bit lower.
so I don't think brown did more damage to his career than kelly.

of course child porn is wrong! But the subject Brown sings about is LOVE and beating a woman is as far from that as one can get. R.Kelly's fans are messed up for standing by him, and I don't know how they let him get away with that. However, R. Kelly is significantly older and brought along an older fan base, where as Chris Brown as legions of teen fans, and I don't think they will embrace him as much unless they are dumb too. If you see some of the comments his fans leave (like calling the victim a ho) then maybe dumb people deserve dumb fans.

about child porn being lower than beating a woman, they are both on a same plane as far as being vile and disgusting crimes against humanity. They can both go on for years without interference, and can cause emotional and physical trauma to the victim. How can one be lower than the other? Abuse and assault goes toe to toe at any level in my book. They are both unacceptable, and you shouldn't be ranking them as far as which one is lower. So because Chris beat Rihanna he won't suffer the consequences? I certainly hope he faces reprecussions. Any excuses made for him is low, and if that is the logic, why isn't every criminal treated the same? I hope Chris Brown did HUGE damage to his career! It' s irresponsible and driving a dumb Lamborghini at 19, goes to show the material idiocy of the kid

February 09, 2009.
MediaTakeOut.com just got some BREAKING NEWS. According to a person close to Rihanna, the R&B singer will not file criminal charges against R&B singer Chris Brown for assault and battery.

Last night, Chris Brown was arrested and released on $50,000 bail in connection with an alleged assault against R&B singer Rihanna Fenty. As MediaTakeOut.com reported to you yesterday, Chris and Rihanna got into a scuffle while leaving Saturday night’s Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy party.

A person close to the situation told MediaTakeOut.com that the scuffle was caused by the couple’s recent break up. As MediaTakeOut.com reported to you weeks ago, the couple had been ratcheting down on their high-profile love affair. Numerous sources confirmed to MediaTakeOut.com that Chris wanted to END the relationship - but Rihanna didn’t.

We should be clear. It's not clear what occurred during the scuffle - or who did what to whom.

But things have changed since Saturday night. Now MediaTakeOut.com can EXCLUSIVELY report that Rihanna does NOT want Chris Brown to be criminally punished for the alleged assault. According to an EXTREMELY reliable insider, Rihanna is NO LONGER assisting investigators in their criminal case against Chris Brown.

Unfortunately for Chris, that’s probably not going to make the charges go away. Police claim that, on the scene of the incident, Rihanna identified Chris Brown as the man who assaulted her. Additionally, police have physical evidence. MediaTakeOut.com can OFFICIALLY CONFIRM that Rihanna’s face and arm were severely bruised in the incident and Chris suffered from minor bruising as well.

There is some evidence in Chris’ favor, however. For example, according to a MediaTakeOut.com reader on the scene, Rihanna did NOT call the police alleging that Chris assaulted her. It was a bystander that called 9-1-1. Shortly afterwards, the police arrived on scene and interviewed Rihanna.

We’ll continue bringing you periodic updates into exactly what’s going on in this story. Trust when we tell you that NO OTHER NEWS SOURCE in the world has more access to the people around Chris and Rihanna than MediaTakeOut.com does.

This is so shocking

He seems sweet, totally up himself, but not abusive.

There's going to be a lot of damage control on his part.

I didn't know Rihanna wasn't her real name

My two cents about the issue if this will alter Chris Brown's fans from adoring him , well I think the fact that a lot of Chris Brown's fans are those of Rihanna's too (I would imagine) then they would probably take the side of the victim rather than the attacker.. That seems like common sense to me..
