I can see where she is coming from. I mean Nicole Kidman isn't a fantastic actress or anything - the only movie she was good in was "To die for" everything else has just been disappointing (esp Moulin Rouge - what was the deal with that film?) I don't think Halle Berry is the bees knees either.
Lindsay is entitled to her own opinion, and as much as I laugh at her tandoori-ness I don't think she's a terrible actress - not terrific either, but entitled to an opinion which has a lot of truth in it.

Hey, does anybody know the last time an actor was nominated for a role that didn't involve any physical transformation or angst? Uhm, say comedy or something similar. Or fantasy?

Somebody on the first page mentioned slanted press, and while not a fan of Miss Lohan (lately, why do I feel like I'm defending those I dislike? ), I did read that article, and the point of her statement was to express how much of an 'inspiration' Julia Roberts is, or how much Lindsay loves her. It was not meant as an insult to anyone specific, it was just a generalization to emphasize the talents of Julia. - this news article has taken the statement and pushed it completely out of context, which isn't really anything new, but it's sad how easily a person's words can be twisted, and in turn, how easily this can cause backlash. I actually feel sorry for her, because this is not what she meant to express.

that being said, I really don't like Lindsay Lohan.

Icon14 so hot

actually shes going to be in a robert altman movie soon, along side kevin kline & a few more totally respected actors.

most actors never get the chance to work with an all time great director like altman

actually lindsay is a great comedic actor and she will be shwing her range more & more every film.

big ups to L Lo, one of the most beautiful & successful actors & stars in the world

cant wait for the lovebug sequel also loved the originals.

the thing is, (forgive me, i'm replying the first post, havent read everything) these are roles these actresses are playing. they're all really great actresses who have worked really hard to get where they are in the business, i'm pretty sure they didnt make the choice to go 'ugly' or even get naked simply to get an oscar. perhaps its simply the fact that they're good actresses, which i'm afraid lohan is not (as yet) because of her much smaller range. perhaps this is jealousy.

I don't like Halle Berry but I think Nicole Kidman is great. I agree with you about "To Die for" but I loved Moulin Rouge and I thought she was the best thing in it! She was also great in "The Hours" where she realized that looking beautiful worked against the character. And what about "The Others"- she totally carried that movie. She was also great in "Birth" but I know a lot of people didn't like that movie. If anything, I think she's underrated.

Renee Zellwegger was nominated for "Briget Jones" which was a comedy, but that involved a physical transformation. She was also nominated for "Chicago" along with Catherine Zeta Jones (who won- I don't think she deserved to but we won't get into that). Neither role in that film involved much angst. Kate Winslet was nominated for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" which I'd call a comedy. Her character was a little messed up (as we all are) but not totally angst-ridden or traumatized. Kathy Bates in "About Schmidt" also. That's all I can think of for now.

Totally forgot about The Others, I liked that film too.
In Australia Nicole Kidman is over-rated. All you ever hear about is "our Nic" this or "Our Nic" that.... it is enough to make any trashy magazine reader ( ) go crazy.

you're totally right. but when it comes to winning for best actress then i can't think of anyone in the last ten years who won for a comedy. Helen Hunt may be the one.

I remembered some more.
-Marisa Tomei won for "My Cousn Vinnie" (comedy)
-Ian McKellan was nominated for "Lord of the Rings" (fantasy)
-Queen Latifah was nomated for "Chicago" (musical)
-Gwenth Paltrow won for "Shakespeare in Love (comedy)
-Susan Sarandon was nominated for "Igby Goes Down" (Dark comedy, but her role was more funny in a mean way than angsty)
-Audrey Hepurn won for "Roman Holiday" (comedy)
-Frances McDormand won for "Fargo" (dark comedy/thriller) and was nominated for "Almost Famous" (comedy)
-Kate Hudson was nominated for "Almost Famous" (comedy)
It does happen but people ARE more often nominated for dramas.

OMG lostgirl....you did your homework!

Never being a huge fan of Halle's, I lost all respect for her in Monster's Ball, and felt the whole award was given to her for politcal reasons. (Of course, aren't we used to that by now?) Nicole is a decent actress (I, too, LOVED her in Moulin Rouge), but I must give HUGE accolades to Charlize for Monster. Although the movie disturbed me in areas (which it was meant to do), I thought her portrayal of her character was nothing short of believeable. I was left speechless after the end of the movie. As far as being thought-provocking.....that movie EARNED its award!!

^^^
Charlize was great in that movie. before I saw it I'd never considered her much of a 'seious' actress, but now I'm a big fan. It was an incredibly complicated role (without the transformation) and she gave a thoughtful, sensative, and provactive performance. She totally deserved that Oscar.
