ETA: Models with out hips aren't womanly. Doesn't mean they aren't women, just means they aren't womanly, considering the vast majority of women DO have hips, and traditionally "child bearing hips" have been one of the first things associated with femininity.
To cut off certain body types from this 'womanly' category seems harsh. Even if the vast majority have noticable hips shouldn't mean they alone can be described as womanly. I think you should use a different term, like 'curvy'.

^ Well, more prominent hips have always been associated with femininity. It's also an anatomical fact that women have wider pelvic bones in proportion to their bodies than men do. From what I remember, that's how you can distinguish a female skeleton from a male skeleton.

'Womanly' is an adjective that has been around for a long time. It's just like when people describe a guy's physique as very 'masculine' - having broad shoulders etc. And like when small-hipped women are described as having 'boyish' figures.

The definition of 'womanly' itself admits that it's a generalization: "Having qualities generally attributed to a woman.". So, of course, in regards to figures there are going to be exceptions that are left out. It doesn't mean that women who don't have a 'womanly' figure are any less of a woman, they just don't have the figure that is most common to women.

^ Exactly!

It's neither a character judgment nor a critique. It's simply a statement of the fact that a female may or may not have the physical attributes commonly found in women.

It's proven that women have different bodies than men. Our skeletons are built differently, in different sizes and proportions and our fat is distributed in different areas. Our skulls are also built differently, and women tend to have less vertical cheekbones and a rounded jawline. It's not a bad thing to have strikingly high cheekbones or no hips, it's just not "womanly".

hi Ruthie, i noticed you said you're 5' 11.5" and a size 4, me too! hehehe okay i know that was a little off topic, but i had to say something .

but yeah, my story is similar to yours: i used to be that slim 0/2 pant but then towards the end of high school (when puberty really finally hit for me) i filled out and now i'm a size 4 pant ( im not trying to imply that a 4 is by any means large, im simply saying its fuller than the way i used to be)

Haha, me too! 5'11.5, size 4. Except I used to be at a normal weight, definitely not too skinny but not chubby either. So not everyone that's tall is 'abnormal'. :P

I don't understand what dictates a 'real body' or 'womanly figure.' To me, a 'womanly figure' is any figure that any woman has--it shouldn't be limited to one certain size or shape.

i agree with you. youll find if the designer loves the model he will use her no matter what.. looka t eugenia, elise crombez.. etc.
