I remembered one day I was watching current affairs on tv where they were asking the public opinion regarding Dove campaign for real beauty, they had this huge billboard ad of real women in their undies on top of a building to promote healthy self image or something to that effect, most women reactions were happy but most men on the other hand were repulsed by it!! LOL!! I guess they were so used to seeing women being photoshoped to death in playboy magazines or any other men magazines as opposed to seeing rolls and cellulites, it's just ridiculous. My point is that, even straight men nowadays are so desentisized by these images that they might started to like skinny girls, or is it? I hope I was wrong though..

Oh I see you're talking about the Chicago Sun-Times reactions...
It's a cultural issue though. I doubt Greek guys would have any issues with the 6 ordinary-looking ladies shown above. Sure they appreciate the "fantasy lady" as well, but IMO they're capable of separating fantasy from reality and choose what's best for them [or so I've seen in my social circle]. Furthermore, I remember reading an article [I don't recall where it was though -sorry-] about how men after being constantly exposed to unbelievably perfect & unattainable yet fake women in TV, billboards, commercials, films, etc. would make them feel as if these "fantasy women" were easily accessible and the norm and make them dissatisfied with their own wives, girlfriends, etc |

I find that (and yes i know i'm generalising here) the younger the guy, the skinnier he likes his women.
I'm not sure if it's to do with the type of images that they were exposed to in their formative years? For example, old men seem to like a curvy figure and this is the sort of figure that was popular when they were teenagers, and therefore I think it would be older men who would appreciate the women in the Dove advert. Or maybe as they get older, they just get more grateful and less fussy! ![]()

Guys like those skinny women as an idyllic woman because in "real life" for most of them its not possible to attract girls who look like that.
They know most of the time its just a fantasy. What guy wants to fall in love with an eating disorder or cuddle up to a bag of bones?

Back to your post, I get what you're saying - you'd think they have some idea of what they were getting themselves into. But in all honesty, a scout won't tell a girl all the troubles that lie ahead (weight issues, traveling, exhaustion, heavy work schedule, expenses). He's just going to fill her heads with fame and glory. And since the true side of modeling (substance abuse, eating disorders, etc.) is so concealed, how would a normal girl have any idea what it's going to be like? There are few models who are willing to speak about their issues (except Ali, Natalia, Coco, Karen) and even more who pretend there are no problems. Most of the girls who become models never had any idea/dream about fashion; they're usually self-professed tomboys who couldn't name a fashion label if you asked. Researching tFS won't help much since the weight-talk ban includes "So You Want to Be a Model...". But on the flip side, once they get in and start to see the uglier side of modeling - aka when their booker starts pressuring them to lose weight - they have a choice. And I get that a lot of girls are trying to support their family, but I find it a little hard to believe that every single model comes from extreme poverty and is the sole breadwinner for their family. I'm sure it happens, but not at a high frequency. For the most part, I notice that most models come from middle class families who just want to make their families comfortable - but it's possible to do that by going to school or getting a regular job. They just want to bypass that and take the "fast and easy" route (which isn't really fast and easy). If you look at some of the models who have admitted to eating issues, most of them haven't come from extreme poverty, which makes me wonder why they would choose to sacrifice their health for the sake of making money. Their families aren't rolling in money but they're not exactly on welfare and on the verge of being evicted. It isn't exactly an intense pressure of "lose weight or go home and watch your family suffer." But then look what happens when you DO lose weight... Snejana has 2 Bentleys and in most backstage photos, models carry iPhones and Blackberrys, as well as expensive handbags and shoes. Anyway, the real reason why I came into this post was because I read a post on Oh No They Didn't featuring Christina Hendricks, one of the most gorgeous women on television right now: ![]() source I thought 2 quotes from the article were particularly interesting: Quote:

^ thanks for posting that.
to me, women like christina hendricks (kate winslet comes to mind as well) outshine any size zero supermodel. because not only are they beautiful, but they accept and love their bodies for what they are. you can have legs that go on for miles, or cheekbones as defined as kate moss's, but none of that compares to having the confidence like those women have.

Hyperthyroidism leads to death, so if you have it, you need to get checked out by a doctor who will prescribe medication that will regulate your hormone levels so you're not at risk of a heart attack/stroke. It also works in reverse. An underactive thyroid makes it difficult to burn off what you eat and gain a lot of weight in a short period of time (your thyroid could choose to act up at any age - in your teens, 20s, 30s, etc.). /biochemistry lesson of the day |
