Yes Binging and Purging are classic symptoms/characteristics of Bulimia Nervosa (the technical term for Bulimia).

i don't know about taking crazy pills, but everytime i come to this thread i want to say so many things i cannot say Anyway, i doubt there will be a signifcant change in the body types we are seeing nowadays on runways. About body image and beauty image, models have always have to live up to unrealistic standards. the models of the 90s who look like "middle aged moms" compared to the girls of today were still quite thin, though they had hips that gave them a more "curvacious" look and set standards of beauty it is still quite hard to live up to. Models have never possessed a look of the "norm" and have always set an unrealistic standard for the general public, but even more so today.

Most of the times when people post in this thread and go "oooh, look at this girls, she is soooo skinny" and she's 5'10 and about 100 lbs, i don't think most realize that it isn't THIS girl that people are looking at that set the unrealistic standard. I think it is someone with a body like Adriana Lima, Flavia, Behati, Gisele and even Claudia Schiffer etc. (yes, those "curvy" bodies). Remember, a very, very small population of people are model fans and i highly doubt there are many girls of the general public with Anorexia who look at someone like Vlada or Siri and say "OMG, i wanna look like that " Anorexia is something you get lost in; you lose a realistic perception of your body and i don't believe that REAL anorexics, not the silly proanas, look at the hyper thin girls we see on the catwalks and aspire to look like them. The person with the most distorted body image can look at the standardized girl of a Lanvin show and agree they are way too thin. Most of the time we are looking at the thinnest of the thin (in this here thread), that almost everyone, even those with EDs, can agree that is disgusting.

I hope my post makes sense to you all, because it makes sense to me

The woman is beautiful and clearly the clothes look as good on her as they would a 'runway model'.

BUT I find this incredibly ironic since Max Mara recently used Snejana Onopka and Lily Donaldson - two of the THINNEST models out there - to front their Fall and Spring campaigns, respectively.

Double standard much?

it was a good watch.

no, it's only because she used ipecac, a medicine that induces vomiting. it's usually for emergencies only eg. if someone has overdosed on pills or a child has swallowed something toxic. constant use or even a few times causes much damage. for an example of what it does:

edit: please see tFS guidelines
(i feel so sorry for that guy. reality tv is disgusting)

oh and i didn't know that tfs automatically embeds the video. i don't recommend people watch it unless you want to see the horrinle effects of ipecac.

No I think there is a seperate ED just for purging every once and awhile. Bulimics usually purge everyday, sometimes several times a day, after bingeing on alot of food.

Man that video is feral and I'm just about to have my lunch
I can understand why people want to throw up to lose weight obviously but i don't know how they can put themselves through that repetitively. I feel truly sorry for people that feel the need to do that, it must make their lives hell.

I know this is a couple of pages after the KK clip debate but its weird because I watched the show today online, without having seen the discussion on here about it, and the first thing that came to mind when they showed that part was "Oh My God they did not just show that" just because of all the negative publicity surrounding her weight gain.
We the audience were not privy to what really was the problem with the garment, but the fact of the matter is that it busted not on anyone else but on the one model who is "bigger" that she's ever been during her career.
I'm not saying that they purposely wanted to insult her but it was still interesting the clip they used.

It has to occur at least around twice a week for 3 months for it to be officially Bulimia. Anything else would be ED-NOS (Not Otherwise Specified) or possibly Anorexia (Purging subtype)
Quote:
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM-IV TR) published by the American Psychological Association, the criteria for diagnosing a patient with bulimia are:
  • Recurrent episodes of binge eating. An episode of binge eating is characterized by both of the following:
    • Eating, in a fixed period of time, an amount of food that is definitely larger than most people would eat under similar circumstances.
    • A lack of control over eating during the episode: a feeling that one cannot stop eating or control what or how much one is eating.
  • Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behavior to prevent weight gain, such as: self-induced vomiting; misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or other medications; fasting; excessive exercise.
  • Self-evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and weight.
  • These symptoms occur at least twice a week on average and persist for at least 3 months.
  • The disturbance does not occur exclusively during episodes of Anorexia Nervosa.[4]
There are two sub-types of Bulimia Nervosa: purging and non-purging.
  • Purging Type: the patient uses self-induced vomiting (which may include use of emetics such as syrup of ipecac) and other ways to rapidly remove food from the body before it can be digested, such as laxatives, diuretics, and enemas.
  • Non-purging Type: occurring in approximately 6%-8% of cases, in which the patient uses excessive exercise or fasting after a binge to offset the caloric intake after eating. Purging-type bulimics may also exercise or fast, but as a secondary form of weight control.[4]

That's another thing that puzzled me though... What is the main differences between real anorexics and proanas? Are proanas not yet anorexic??

You don't have to purge to be considered as bulimic. You just have to binge most days for a long time and be obsessed about food and when/how you will do your crisis of bulimia. Bulimics use different ways to keep a normal weight, including purging but not only.

True. Binging is the main characteristic. If there is no binge then it is not Bulimia. I totally skipped over the non-purging part when replying above - I should've said '...for it to be officially Bulimia (purging subtype)'.
