I'm confused about this line: "Models are also leggier than before. Usually about 5 feet 10 inches tall, they are a good five inches taller than they were 10 years ago. "

I know that most models weren't 5'5" in the 90s, but there aren't that many who're over 6' today, are there?

There is a girl in our school who is also somewhere around 6'2, and she is 18, and has Hanas type of body...and she is completely normal eating, happy girl, and she is not in the modeling business. There are always expections..

I think it is so sad that Snejana has been made the scapegoat of this whole debate. People, of course, will have their opinions all of which are their own prerogative, but it's not surprising she needs time off - she's talked about as if she's not even human.

If the industry, media and instigators of these regulations want to make it an issue that has real impact, they need to start thinking more about the young girls, the girls who do smaller Fashion Weeks, at smaller agencies, who don't have threads at TFS and help them! Because they can change the aesthetic of fashion. No one will ask Gemma, Hana, Sasha or any of the big models to change - because nothing will change over night. And fashion might never change, but if there was a point where the regulations were such that designers were never sent a model who was under a prescribed weight limit, you never know? A sample size might be let out a few inches, and then a few inches more.

I don't know what will ever seriously change in fashion, but these young girls do carry a heavy burden - and that does need looking at...

I do so agree with you! Karma..

Snejana has really become the face of the (too) thin models, while there are many girls out there with 'problems' with their weight. It's just not fair

I don't understand how people can be horrible about the thin models. If they do have problems; why be so mean? People don't post pictures of people with other mental/physical problems and slag them off - it's cruel. We should just wish that those who are unhealthy get better.

I agree with you...it is as if people get a huge kick out of posting and commenting on models who they think might have an ED.

I saw a documentary last week about young girls with anorexia...not one girl mentioned models when talking about thier illness....and even the director of made no such links.

...Particularly disturbing are indications that the quest for perfection is reaching into younger age groups. Kids form their body images almost as soon as they can form words, and girls are now thinking negatively about their shapes in grammar school. Today, 42 percent of first- to third-grade girls want to be thinner, while 81 percent of 10-year-olds are afraid of getting fat, according to a 2004 global study...
^^^This is sooo important to understand. Perpetuation of the "under-weight is beautiful" body myth endangers the lives of some of our daughters. That is why some characterize those decision-makers as criminals who are (indirectly)assaulting our children.

If you've watched Lauren Greenfield's documentary "Thin" (HBO http://www.hbo.com/docs/programs/thin/index.html ) you've seen that once ED/BDD sets in it can become irreversible, resulting in significant physical damage and even death.

Exactly my sentiments.
The funny thing is - a magazine can cover some "scary skinny" models on a catwalk, and a few pages later have a celebrity sitting front row of the very same show...and oh goodness, you can see their cellulite. That, to me, is FAR more dangerous...
