If Balanchine has created this aesthetic, other choreographers have followed and adopted it as the norm. Mikhail Baryshinikov, star dancer and former director of American Ballet Theatre, did not tolerate any body type but the Balanchine one (Gordon, 1983). During rehearsal and without any warning, he fired a corps de ballet member because she was too “fat” in his opinion (Gordon, 1983). He said that he “couldn’t stand to see her onstage anymore” (Gordon, 1983, p.150). Fortunately, management intervened and the dancer was rehired. However, Baryshinikov and the rest of his management were known to have had meetings with their dancers in order to emphasize the importance of weight loss (Gordon, 1983). Obviously, dancers need to be fit and trim in order to be successful in their occupation, and no one should argue that staying fit is not helpful in order to see a dancer’s body line; however, it is the extreme skeletal goal that is cause for so much concern. thanks for the article, karma. i didnt know about the history of this at all. and wow, Baryshinikov, i had no idea. ill never be able to watch sex and the city the same way again

i was just reading in touch magazine with nicole richie on the cover, and it says that she's 83 pounds(at 5'1 height),her bmi must be 15.7,waaaaay underweight.nd i and my girl friends did some math to estimate how much we should weight (at our heights)to look like nicole, and it just scared me so much.because in order to look like that skinny,me at 5"6 will have to weight 90 pounds which is severely underweight, and considering i'm 110 pounds now,i'm considered fat in hollywood i guess.it's very disturbing where our society is heading towards....

its like athletes, just a different workout.
You would actually be very surprised by how many top Olympic athletes have struggled with EDs.

Jssy, that commercial, as haunting as it is, is quite important. Karma to you!

Very rarely is the concept of body dismorphia (or body dismorphic disorder, BDD) explained or even mentioned in the discussion of disordered eating. BDD is an absolutely horrible mental disease that turns your visual self-perceptions into a fun-house mirror. While it is a separate mental disease, BDD often exhibits comorbidity with eating disorders.

Its just hard to watch that girl go through her habitual motions. While I cannot illuminate this for those with bulimia nervosa, I know that some anoretic individuals tend to develop habitual physical points of interest that they scrutinize to determine success and progress. Some measure how easily they can wrap the thumb and index finger around their wrists...some are focused on that feeling of a prominent sternum. Though that behavior is far harder to actively participate in than to watch passively.

^Bianca, that is absolutely the truth. Yes, Carrme you're right, gymnists are notorious (as much so as ballerinas), for being prone to disordered eating. I believe the same is similar with divers, wrestlers, and figure skaters as well. At least that's all I can recall at the moment.

If you look at any judged sport, for all of them eating disorders are quite common.

^^Yes, well--because they are judged--they want to look "perfect", even if they already look amazing.

Oh Jssy... That's a haunting commercial, but thank you.

Actually, my ex-best friend definitely has an ED. Her parents have confirmed it and have told me about it. Her parents hear her throwing up after dinner, even though she barely eats. In school, she doesn't eat anything and just drinks bottles and bottles of water. Her parents were scared to do anything about it, so they asked me and a few times, I've hinted to my friend that she should be eating more than she is. She's either been ignorant about it or gotten defensive.
So I straight-out asked if she was eating and she's stormed out and isn't talking to me now.
I've apologized again and again, but she still won't talk to me. Right now, I just want her to be healthy!

I have to say that I don't like Kate Bosworth's 'new look'. I think she looked better thinner - now her face is so BIG....

i mean i would question nicole richie but mk?

it was one phase in her life that she looked unhealthy and now it sticks to her? that is just unfair.
What would she have to do for you to believe her?...
Tattoo ED on her forhead?...Or just drop dead?
She looked like walking death ( like at the NYM premiere)...
admitted her problem and went to rehab....
then came back healthier looking and had an eating coach following her around.

Do you really think she did all that b/c of the media?

I think this is a really good quote explaining why athletes can be very prone, perhaps moreso than an average person, to develop an eating disorder:

"Athletes are perfectionists. They're goal orientated, highly motivated and prepared to hurt themselves physically to reach their goals. They're the same characteristics you find in people who develop eating problems"
—Jeff Bond, former head psychologist at the Australian Institute of Sport.

Here are scans of the full article the quote came from for those who want to read more about it

I think with these sports we have mentioned each one requires movement... and with all do respect you do perform better with a thin body.. you cannot be 280 and be fliiping and twirlign like that. I don't mean that you must have an ED .. but a slim figure does help
same with Hockey... there is a weight issue there too... the bigger you are... the more they expect you to perform and be the tough guy of the team

Wow, horrible but important video ~ thanks; it actually made me feel sick to my stomach to watch especially since I happened to be eating lunch at the same time... Karma for you.
