it definately makes their legs look longer and their hips look narrower. i was looking through the emporio armani show where the girls wear flats, and i was shocked. they looked so much shorter and normaler...

Hmm...I've never ventured into this thread before, but ever since one of my Livejournal friends questioned me (Amicably) regarding my view on the weight situation with today's models, I've given this whole issue a lot more consideration.

Her question was:

3) There has been much talk and debate about the fashion industry's obsession with ultra-thin models: 1) as an unrealistic and unhealthy role model for young women 2) as a contributor to the death of several models this past year (Ana Carolina Reston, Luisel & Eliana Ramos) 3) as well as the possible need for mandatory banning of models with a BMI (body mas index) <18 from the runways. What are your thoughts on this?

And my answer, which I won't post here because it's beyond long, is in the midst of this post:

http://users.livejournal.com/_____faith/146787.html

Those are just my personal viewpoints on this entire situation, so note in advance that I already agree to disagree on anyone else's different perspective

The exact psychological aspect of a girl's fascination with model physicality is something I have yet to research thoroughly, but since we'll be discussing it in my psychology course, I imagine I'll have more words on that topic soon

And regarding the Sasha/Snejana interview: their words do not ring true to me in the least, but I think they probably were irritated enough to just throw random responses out. I imagine that it was not a friendly setting.

But alas, the interviewer should've realized she was just getting conditioned responses (Unless she was publishing this for irony's sake?)!

This is an interesting article from New York Magazine The Unbearable Thinness of being a model. It has a few different perspectives, and there were some comments that rang true to me. See what you think

^ Thanks for that

I'm always finding myself trying to stick up for these models, I dont know why, but I dont think its fair to label them X Y Z when we dont know the truth, I mean, were living in such a strange world because this is a slim fast women:

[slim fast]

And now many many people would think thats slim, and many would think she's fat

But then...

[style]

There are people who think Doutzen is fat, asking in threads if she is a 'plus sized' model which is unbelievable, so Its no wonder when someone thinks Snejana is underweight (I personally dont though, I think she looks nice, but thats my opinion and I respect anyone elses)

[style]

...But I dont think these models starve theirselves, I mean, I'm pretty sure Snejana, Sasha, Vlada etc never really found theirselves beautiful enough to be a model, and they were most likely scouted by someone else for having the look, so I dont think the fashion inudstry is to blame, although maybe a few extra pounds is, but I just find that everyone has such different views on whats 'fat' and whats 'thin' that its just far too hard to agree

^^Thanks miu miu. I think model_mom posted it a few pages back but it is a very interesting article.

There are a number of different points of view from different models. It's hard to know who to believe. Wouldn't it be a fascinating experiment to sit a dozen models down in a private setting, and with complete guarantee of confidentiality, find out what they really think.

Sorry if it is a repost
But JR1 you're right, I think this is a great post because it shows what I've long been saying - that the distortions in what is perceived as fat and what is perceived as thin is now so disparate, this is the most dangerous element of the whole weight debate. People who are too thin are criticized, obesity is a death sentence, lose weight and you've lost too much, gain 5 lbs and everyone can see your cellulite. It's no wonder there's confusion and upset; the real messages about healthy lifestyle are lost amidst all the body talk..

I disagree with parts of this. <900kcals daily is considered starvation, and, it's simply a personal opinion, but I doubt Snejana meets that judging from the way her body looks.

& as far as the scouting thing goes, I know of at least one person who got scouted to be a model with an existing eating disorder. The agent couldn't tell and the girl, why would she?

I'm more saying that I look at face first, then body, and if I don't like the body, then I probably don't like the girl. Vlada, for example. I think she's pretty but I can't get over her body.

I'm guessing she meant the other Johanna... But regardless, it's not her either (she looks fine too imo), it's Yevgeniya Kedrova.

There's such a huge pressure on models today. I guess there always was, but it's gone extreme. The notion of the "ideal" runway body has obviously changed, and a model's lifespan is so short. There are more models than ever, and unless you're at very top, you know you risk being swapped for some random pre-pubescent 14-year-old at any moment. So you must stay better.... thinner... better... than the rest.

I'm friends or acquaintanted with, especially, Swedish models on all levels, and 95 % of them look perfectly healthy. I know you can never know, but while they're skinny and way too many smoke, they eat like normal people and don't look like walking corpses. But then most of them will never set foot on the major runways... while one of the few anorexic models I know is currently walking the Milan "all models need a health certificate" runways...

And if I compare, I'd say the more international success, the more unhealthy lifestyle. This is a broad generalization, of course, but in my experience, when you enter the whole fashion circus it's very easy to pick up habits and just get swept away by that whole lifestyle. Of course there are models who are naturally skin and bone, but you don't have to have an ED to be unhealthy... Too much stress, smoking, diet coke and snacks instead of proper meals, combined with too much partying and too little sleep does the trick as well....
