and what, the parents are totally immune? if you exist in a society, you know the rules, so to speak. im not just talking about weight, im talking about everything, how we interact with eachother and how we view life is determined by social constructed that are learned. Body image is just one of those learned things.

not to mention the fact that 13, 14, and 15 year olds care far more about what their peers think than their parents

If you have lived in a positive home environment which has taught you to 'right' and 'wrong' chances are you are less prone to society's influences and 'images'. But then again, there are people who come from homes like that and end up in prostitution or have anorexia, and those raised in 'negative' environments may not be affected at all.
I don't really think there is any 'real' correlation bwteen upbringing and eating disorders ...it's confusing.
Besides, isn't an eating disorder all about control, not about being thin? I hear it both ways though, but it's usually described as the person feels a loss of control over something in there life (maybe someone dying, etc) and feel that the only thing they can control is their food intake...I dunno.

Being a psych major, most classes have a section on EDs. Some random hippie kid (my school is full of them) always brings up the models (of which they probably could not even name one) - saying how its the fashion industry's fault for eating disorders. Someone usually brings up the change in model's body types since the supers - and blames this for for EDs as well.

However, my argument is, that naturally culture plays a huge role on the development of eating disorders - considering it is considered by the DSM and ICD to be a "culture bound syndrome" (meaning it is not a universal disease such as schitzophrenia and depression). One of the greatest underlying symptoms of an ED such as Anorexia is that the individual does not see one's body as it appears (meaning that they still think they look "fat" no matter how thin they are).

Thus, in regards to the "ever-shrinking model" debate, back in the 80's or whenever, yes the models were more voluptuous than today, but its not as if people (girls in particular) who suffer from Anorexia are going to get down to that model's size and think "wow! Im finally thin enough!" Since they do not percieve themselves as ever thin enough, they will keep going. So today, when the models are much thinner, it is no different. People on this thread constantly say how the "healthier" looking models give off a much better image to adolescent girls. While I in no way disagree to this, the fact remains that no matter if the models are a size 0 or a size 4, girls with eating disorders will never see themselves as "thin enough."

I like the guys, too! IMO they look better than fine! I actually prefer skinny guys over well defined ones!

This whole model body image. Does anyone else find it unattractive? What's so good about being small-boned?
