Getting all arty for a moment and trying to put myself into the shoes of the photographer, I could kinda understand how it's interesting to see the bones from an artistic perspective, in the same way that it is interesting to see the curves and anatomical features of a larger subject - it's a study of human form. Of course where this falls down is that in fine art photography or sculpture or painting you would see a whole range of shapes from very skinny all the way through to obese. (Artists doing what artists do I suppose and trying to shock or surprise people.) But in high fashion you only ever see one shape.
To me this suggests it's less about "art" and more about something else. Fashion, unlike other high end art, is a huge business catering to the mass market. Fashion is more like Hollywood movies. In the movies you never depart too far from the winning formula because you are trying to sell your product to the biggest group of people. Rightly or wrongly everybody wants to be thin, and so the winning formula in fashion is to wrap your clothes around somebody who is obviously very thin. It's marketing by association. This is a very long-winded way of agreeing with you 2Nova. But the reason they are blatanty exploiting her figure is to blatanty market the clothes. Last edited by sbey : 29-12-2007 at 04:10 PM. |

But, alimi, how can you be so dismayed and disgusted when you yourself are a model, partaking in the business, and are obviously very skinny too???? Not really implying, just a bit confused is all

![]() I found her in the Polaroids thread and thought her weight looked pretty healthy and even meatier than most models today, but after visiting her thread I wouldn't called her "meaty" at all haha. Last edited by zig_zag : 29-12-2007 at 05:18 PM. |

well, i've recently realized for myself what is really important. it's not worth it to make yourself unhappy by consuming yourself with an unrealistic and superficial goal of being as thin as possible just so that you can get work. some of the things that go hand in hand with eating disorders or striving for this extremely thin body can affect one's body in the future. i understand that some girls are naturally thin, but not ALL of them are and many of them that are not feel an incredible amount of pressure to get skinnier and skinnier. whenever you're unable to reach that size or if you do reach it in an unhealthy way, it can make you miserable. it's simply not worth it.

I hate it when fashion designers say that clothes look better on very thin women. look at women like scarlett johanssen, who always amazing in what she wears:
![]() ![]() I really don't understand how anyone can argue that this outfit below looks best on an unusually thin person rather than a more curvy woman: ![]() photos from www.scarlett-fan.com and kim noorda's thread |

true, scarlett is still probably thinner than average, but the point is she is much bigger than any fashion model and she makes the clothes look great. So designers who defend their use of tiny models by saying that clothes look best on a size 0 person are just talking out of their arses.

there are certain thngs that look ridiculous on skinny people, like curve-hugging high-waisted skirts and certain cuts of dresses.scarlett is indeed a good example of that

I think thin women are more versatile when it comes to modeling clothing. It's easier for them to look better in many different types of clothing. Sure a curvy woman would look better in a particular outfit than a thin woman but she can also a lot worse. I think thin women in general usually look at least OK. However, I think skeletal models don't look good in anything, the best they can look is OK imo. Girls like Siri, Kim, and Olga look bad in pretty much everything. Also, when really thin models wear dresses, they look horrible for the most part. It doesn't even look like a woman wearing a dress, it looks someone just through a piece of cloth on something. A lot of the time I'll think a dress is boring on the runway but when I see it on a curvier actress, it looks phenomenal. Thin to me equals Gemma and Doutzen, not what the models are today. It's totally disgusting and it doesn't even look good.
