While it may not be correct, the terms disease, disorder, illness are often used interchangeably. e.g even the National Institute of Mental Health says "Eating disorders are treatable diseases".

You've got to be kidding me ( I just saw the twin documentary). Those two are completely mental. They are 35 and sleep in the goddamn same room. They don't have "anorexia" they just have some serious mental issues.

And the comments on the Digg article...I guess that's why I was posting this in the first place, to point out what people outside of the fashion world think, even though they are basically repetitions of what has been said in this thread.

LOL...(don't mean to laugh)....but I know! It's like some OCD behavior they have. It really made me sad when I was watching it. It seems like such a "crazy" behavior to most of us, but it's something they have been doing for years. Can you imagine if those two were forced to be apart to get help? Seriously, one of them would probably kill herself.

Well, every disease is "treatable." With some psychological cases, the only viable treatment that would work is a complete change of life style and mental perception of oneself. Psychological diseases are never caused by a single factor, they're far more complex and they develop over time. You can say the person with anorexia is a victim of society, bad parenting, whatever, but the disease is a creation of the victim's own messed up mind. You may not be able to blame the "messing up" on the anorexic, but you cannot deny it is messed up.

Anorexia is a serious mental issue, and many times it does not stand alone.

I remember watching that mini-series on Entertainment Tonight. Did they end up passing away or overcoming the disease?

I remember they had a can of oatmeal or chili (can't remember which) in their cupboard and they refused to eat it because it had too many calories.
