The thing that strikes me the most re: the difference between models today and 4 years ago is the attitude... Back in 2002/04 the girls were fierce, and they looked strong on the runway... Now a lot of them look soft, otherwordly...

They were slightly bigger but not that much...

Girls were so much bigger just four years ago! That's mad, we don't even have to look back ten years.

Daria and Hana were thin here but I think they got thinner afterwards as well. I wonder when the actual turning point was when designers decided the we need miniscule? Probably with the arrival of Snejana and Vlada.

case in point:

I don't think any Versace show is a good reference to compare the models of today, yesterday and tomorrow. This has to do with the aesthetic of Donatella who casts the babes and hotties and bans most bland waifs from her runway. Take SS 08...the most prominent models there are not considered waifs and are perceived mainly as hotter than their fellow models. Think of Maryna, Tanya, Caroline T, Raquel, Catherine, Viviane etc etc. Although, I have to admit that the presence of Snejana, Sasha, Suvi (I mean, come on she is not Versace material ) Vlada and Magdalena (although I consider her hot, no matter that she is so thin) seems to be iffy here. However, let's take a look at that SS 04 show again. We see Jacquetta Wheeler, who, in her hayday, was the epitome of the British waif...we see Elise Crombez, the teenboy of 2004...Hana who was very thin back then, Erin W as you pointed out...boobless Michelle B etc etc. So, I'd say not much changed over the past decade EXCEPT for age....now that is the big boogieman in this whole issue I believe.

look at the pictures I posted, these "old-fashion" VS models look so feminine and today VS models are just a piece of plastic and they are too skinny.

This similar to Mr-Dale's post has nothing much to do with the past but more so with the show. If you watch Versace shows on youtube you'll see that even though these girls may seem dead in other fashion shows, they turn it on at Versace because they're simply told to. Watch any Versace show and you'll see that the models still swagger as they did in 2004.

I think we can't compare the old school models w/ the latest girls, different generations, different styles!

In Claudia and Cindy's generation models that made success were the ones who had women's body, today models don't have to have breasts or anything of the kind to be successful!

That's an interesting topic. Those who are "allowed" to be pretty - I think you're on to something there, fontenrose.
Today's society's beauty norms and ideals only approve of slimness to be the definition of beauty. And some of it is actually quite rational and agreeable. Of course it's prettiest to be slim and in good shape, coz then your figure and body features really stand out and you're able to see what a human being is made of. Obviously, extra unnaturally weight isn't beautiful, imo, as it covers up your shape and hides the 'real' body landscape.
Still, it's interesting to know where the line is drawn between being unhealthy and more or less overweight and to be slim, pretty and healthy.
High fashion designers tend to celebrate the scaaaary thin (actually very únhealthy) body and their interpretation seems to be rubbing of and influencing the society's beauty norms. This fact is ugly, I think, as it encourages young girls to slim down to feel the need of acceptance and admiration It's twisted because your qualities isn't centered on your character but on your outer appearance only. Therefore I also agree with taben about today's models is lacking the fierceness because a big part of the fashion world is focusing and obsessing with bodyweight, height and measurements etc. only...

I have to disagree. The VS models today I think are just as feminine and not too skinny at all. They have toned legs, arms, and stomach and appear completely fine and healthy on the runway. I always thought VS was kind of known for having the hottest bods on their runway, no?

That would be Doutzen. SHE has stomach muscles. Apparently she is also a speed skater.

Is it just me or does Sasha look like she's lost weight?

Look at Flavia, Selita and Izabel. They are as skinny as any HF runway model only with plastic looking body parts. While VS may have once been known for having the "hottest" bodies, I certainly don't think they are anymore.

I also found this interesting:

I was at a Nirvana show at the Coliseum (now the Time Warner Center) in NYC and saw Kate Moss, Christy Turlinglton, Naomi Campbell and a couple of others walking around. Forgive me for not remembering all. It was AGES ago!!!!

Also, I used to work at a store called NaNa on Prince St. in SoHo (it's no longer there) and lots of models (see below), photographers (Steven Meisel), designers (Anna Sui) and rockstars (Kim Gordon) used to come in all the time.

On on day in particular, Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymore and Christy Turlington all came in together and bought a bunch of stuff. Christy bought a jumpsuit meant for children, but she's so tiny, it fit. Another fun fact is they bought the clothes as if they were rounds at a bar "Okay girls, this one's on me!" It was pretty funny.
http://www.thefashionspot.com/forums...ml#post4002473

I posted pics of Christy Turlington just a few pages back and she looks positively voltupuous compared to most runway models today but she was still very thin and tiny. I find it odd that standards could change so much in just a short while where now Christy is "curvy" and Laeticia Casta is "fat".

I remember reading an article long time ago was vogue I think that said now castings look for girls with no expression and very thin so everyone could focuse on the clothes and not the body wich I think is part true and part fake
go to VS thread you'll find most of the posts are about whose body's better and who look hotter totally forgotten the clothes that I think must of the people never seem to look at the clothes on VS

the article ended saying that Anna's Wintour's eyes were on Snejana (before she had the success now she has)

and people the weigh isn't all a girl thiner than Christy Turlington can have much more style than her and I can assure you the clothes look better

Fashion isn't also about being skinny or fat your body has to have style
