I hope on some level that America can help itself with the trend of how small everything seems to be getting technologically.

Well, it's like how of my model friends was complaining that it is impossible to go out to eat in America. She always feels ashamed and like people assume she must have an ED when she cannot finish the HUGE portions given to her. As she said, "one American meal is equivalent to two or even three in my home country!", not just in size, I think, but in fat content. We sure love our processed foods and refined sugars!

And we are pressured to eat everything given to us. The sizes of plates have doubled in the last ten years, I'd say. It's like a dual problem, you know? America got bigger and demanded more food, restaurants responded, and now the typical American portion is ginormous!

As for periods, yes, but honestly, it's almost a blessing to some of them. Never have cramps during shows... don't have to worry about having any accidents in expensive clothes.. but hey, the depo shot does that, too! Ha.

It's possible to order things in half portions here though usually, all you have to do is ask. But I agree, the portions are wonderful for families of 4+ going out to dinner, but as a student (I assume a model's situation would be the same, where they go out to eat alone or with a few friends) the big portions are very inconvenient.

And what about those buckets of soft drinks?

Still, even food that looks the same is now sweetened with corn sugars, which turn out to be both more fattening and less healthy.

it's so, so not worth it though. when your body stops having periods, it is trying to tell you that something is really wrong. putting that kind of stress on a body does not only affect someone here and now, but also in the future. it's so not worth it..

I know its a gossip rag and you should take what they are claiming with a grain of salt, but I thought this was interesting.

It is in regards to Angelina Jolie getting pregnant.

Quote:
The actress also sought the help of a nutritionist. "When Angelina decided to get pregnant, the nutritionist told her that she needed to start eating more calories a day," one source tells OK! "She was averaging 1,000 to 1,100 calories a day, and the nutritionist wanted her to bump it up to between 1,600 and 1,800 a day."

Tell her not to worry, you don't have to be thin to not finish gigantic portions. I rarely finish my meals at restaurants, that's why to-go boxes are your friend. Tell her to learn the joy of the to-go box You can even put it in the box first so no one has to see what you do and don't eat.

Portion size is quite ridiculous in the US. And I agree with the comment that many people feel like they have to eat everything on their plate. Maybe it's a guilt thing. You know the saying "Eat everything on your plate - there are starving children all around the world!". Many of us actually feel guilty for leaving lots on the plate...

Just last night I went out to eat in Boston and ordered a vegetarian spinach salad. The portion was HUGE! Three people could have eaten that salad.

I'd much rather support businesses that serve healthy food and good portions.

Is that right? Are the numbers I've used correct?
In 2005, the NPD Group released a survey saying that ~62% of adults in America are overweight or obese. However, they also pointed out that that number hasn't changed much since 2001. According to them, the percentage for children is 34%.

However, it should be noted that the World Health Organization only lists the United States as #9 on the list of most overweight countries. Nauru comes in first place, with 94.5% of the country being overweight. Here's the complete list.
