i would imagine a single engine plane in any kind of condition or model would be more susceptible to bad weather conditions, especially if lightning at the time of take-off was such a concern.

it's really sad and i feel utterly terrible for the very close-knit missoni family.

Missoni Plane May Have Been Found

There may be a turning point in the search for the plane carrying Vittorio Missoni that went missing a week ago.

According to a report from Caracas, Venezuela, on Italy’s wire service Ansa on Saturday morning, a blip on a Venezuelan Army radar “can identify the location” where the twin-engine plane “may have suddenly lost altitude” en route from the Los Roques archipelago to Caracas on Jan. 4.

Ansa attributes the assertion to the Italian embassy in that city. "It is an area where the ocean floor reaches a depth of 2,000 meters, considered too many for the instrumentations momentarily available,” the Italian embassy said.

"The Venezuelan and Italian authorities are coming to an agreement to continue the search beyond the expected eight days, focusing resources on a defined area and through means that may be more useful.”

^Oh my gosh, that is so awful. My heart goes out to the families affected by this, it's heartbreaking.

This is horrible for the families, the uncertainty must be excruciating. The outcome is rarely good in these situations, so the least I hope is they have some kind of a finishing.

I truly hate those small planes (though, I have no idea what kind of plane were they on), once I was aboard the pilot wanted to show off a little, and he lowered the height suddenly and repeated it multiple times, made sudden turns/other moves etc, and I thought I will die. In the addition, my cousin, who was like 8 yo. then, started vomitting. We weren`t in any real danger, but I think the pilot was stupid enough to get us into!

Missoni Pilot’s License Was Expired

ANSV, Italy's agency for flight security, determined that both the pilot and airline responsible for the plane carrying Vittorio Missoni, which disappeared on January 4, were not fully licensed to operate, La Repubblica writes. Pilot Germán Marchan's flying license expired November 30, 2012, and at 72 years old, his age caused concern from the beginning of the investigation; however, one of his colleagues, Piergiorgio Serloni, previously told La Stampa that Marchan is "one of the most expert and respected pilots in Los Roques." As for the airline, according to La Repubblica, it did "not yet have [a] regular air operator's certificate."

The Italian paper has more details about the incident. The plane took off from Los Roques at 11:32 a.m. for the international airport in Maiquetia, Caracas. Seven minutes later, Marchan or his co-pilot reported the plane's position of ten nautical miles from the island of Gran Roque at 5,000 feet above sea level, but didn't make further contact. Based on data, the plane ascended to 5,400 feet or so, moving 13.2 nautical miles from Gran Roque before losing altitude and speed, and going off the radar.

Ship specialized in deep-water searches to join hunt for missing plane with Missoni CEO

By Associated Press, Updated: Friday, January 25, 6:52 PM

CARACAS, Venezuela — A ship specially equipped for deep-water searches is headed to Venezuela to scan the seafloor for a plane that vanished carrying the CEO of Italian fashion house Missoni, the government said Friday.

The BN-2 Islander plane dropped off radar screens soon after takeoff on Jan. 4 from the resort islands of Los Roques. It was carrying two crew members and four Italian tourists, including Vittorio Missoni, CEO of his family’s fashion company.

The ship will arrive in early February and will expand current search efforts by scanning for the plane in deep waters off the islands, Air and Sea Transport Minister Rear Adm. Elsa Gutierrez told state media.

Italy’s ambassador in Venezuela, Paolo Serpi, said the oceanographic ship belongs to an international company and that Italian and Venezuelan officials had together sought to hire it for the job.

“There are few of them in the world, very few ships equipped for deep searches. In this case, we’re talking about depths of up to 2,000 meters (6,500 feet),” Serpi said in a recent interview on state television. He said such ships don’t exist in Italy because the Mediterranean Sea doesn’t have such depths as the area of the Caribbean where the plane is thought to have gone down.

Serpi said the ship will be looking for not one but two planes.

Another small plane has never been found after disappearing off the islands four years earlier on Jan. 4, 2008. That plane, on a flight from Caracas to Los Roques, vanished with 14 people aboard, including eight Italians, a Swiss man and five Venezuelans. The pilot radioed to controllers that he was having engine trouble before the plane went down as it approached the islands. The body of the Venezuelan co-pilot later washed ashore, but no wreckage was recovered.
