What's the rationale behind the prosecution's wanting a delay? Other than to drain the defense out of time and money?
I mean, does that mean they're hitting roadblocks in terms of finding enough evidence?

Dr. Conrad Murray can chill til September -- his trial for Michael Jackson's death just got pushed back.

Judge Michael Pastor announced the postponement this morning in the manslaughter trial -- opening statements were set to begin next week.

Murray's attorneys asked for the delay so they could prepare for new witnesses the prosecution plans to call.

In related news, Alejandra Jackson (who has four children with two of MJ's brothers, Randy and Jermaine) has been speaking out to RadarOnline about how Michael's kids feel about Dr. Conrad Murray and the allegations surrounding him.

"There is no relationship with Dr. Murray," she said. "The children don't want [anything] to do with him." Alejandra added that Michael's kids were initially surprised that Murray was the one responsible for their father's death. "He was always so nice to the children and he was there to help with their dad. So it was confusing for them.

"They have so much [going on] in their lives right now, emotionally."

^I know! I don't have good feelings about it.
Why can't anything about Michael be done properly?

The judge in the Michael Jackson manslaughter trial just undercut a big part of the defense, by ruling 16 hours of rehearsal footage for the "This Is It" tour doesn't show MJ to be in poor health.

Dr. Conrad Murray's lawyers wanted the outtakes to prove Jackson was very ill in the days before his death. The argument goes -- he was already dying, so Dr. Murray can't be held responsible for his death.

But Judge Michael Pastor ruled ... the outtakes were valuable to Sony Pictures -- which objected to turning over the footage -- and the video did not show MJ in poor health.

If the hours of video show a healthy Michael, it undercuts a major line of defense for Murray.

Dr Conrad Murray Show Down Again Over Jury Sequestration

Last Friday, lawyers for Michael Jackson's doctor filed an emergency appeal seeking to overturn a judge's refusal to sequester jurors in his upcoming trial. In a 28-page petition, Dr. Conrad Murray's lawyers claimed that jurors would be poisoned by publicity unless they were locked up in a hotel during Murray's trial. (They alternatively requested that the judge rescind his decision to have the trial televised.)

But today (September 7), a California appeals court just ruled that the trial judge -- Michael Pastor -- did not abuse his discretion when he decided not to sequester the jury.

The trial will now proceed as scheduled, with the jury selection beginning tomorrow (September 8). About 160 potential jurors will gather in the downtown Los Angeles courthouse to fill out questionnaires to determine if they are qualified to hear the case.

Opening statements in the trial, which will be televised, are expected to be delivered on September 27.

Jury has been chosen for trial
Quote:
The selection of a jury Friday officially began Dr. Conrad Murray's trial, which is expected to continue until the end of October. Murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of pop star Michael Jackson.

Twelve jurors and five alternates will report to court Tuesday morning to hear opening statements in the case against Murray.

"It seems like a good jury panel," defense lawyer Michael Flanagan said after the jury was seated Friday.

The jury consists of seven men and five women, include six who are white, five who listed their ethnicity as Mexican or hispanic and one who identified himself as African-American.

Flanagan said the defense paid little attention to juror's ethnicity, but instead focused on their answers to the 32-page jury questionnaire.

The court released copies of their answers late Friday, giving a glimpse at the 12 Los Angeles County residents who will decide Murray's fate.

Three of the women said they followed the Casey Anthony trial over the summer. Defense lawyers unsuccessfully used the Anthony case to argue that Murray jurors should be sequestered in a hotel during the trial to shelter them from media reports.

One juror, a retired cartoon animator, said he once met Michael Jackson.

Several jurors described themselves as Michael Jackson fans and two have seen "This Is It," the documentary of Jackson's rehearsals just before his death.

They and their fellow jurors will see clips from the film again since the prosecution is expected to show them during the first day of the trial Tuesday.

Murray could face up to four years in prison if the jury finds him guilty.

The Los Angeles coroner has ruled that Jackson's death on June 25, 2009, was caused by an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol combined with other drugs.

Prosecutors have accused Murray, who served as Jackson's personal and full-time physician at the time, of having a role in the overdose.

They contend Murray used a makeshift intravenous drip to administer propofol intended to help Jackson sleep, a practice they argue violated the standard of care and led to the pop music icon's death.

I bet jury selection was tough. People have such strong opinions of Michael.
