I'm the opposite; the safe and casual-look is what I like about in Bee, and being too try-hard and fashionable is the trap Julia sometimes falls for.

Bee's quite a pretty girl. The quintessential All-American upper-class girl.

I don't know who Julia is. Is her mom the editor of French Vogue/

They kind of look alike, which is weird because their mothers are like the day and night...It looks like Bee is the good student/preppy sister and Julia's the wilder one.

Bee Shaffer on the Fashion Week carnival

Each time Fashion Week rolls around, you can usually spot the trends early on. And, since I am writing before many of the shows have happened, I decided to ask some of the designers what the theme of their autumn collections would be, hoping I could rely on the past trend of there always being a trend.
A perfect opportunity came up last Thursday, at a party for Mario Testino, at Phillips de Pury, to celebrate his new exhibition, Out of Fashion. The pictures themselves were extraordinary, and extraordinarily provocative: huge prints of Gisele Bündchen wearing nothing but metallic micro-minis, Madonna's Ray of Light album cover, and a pre-Apple Gwyneth Paltrow in black lingerie. As one guest said to me: "I think Mario is the only one who can get Oscar-winning actresses to dress like that for a photo."
The party was fantastic, the perfect soirée to kick off Fashion Week. Mario was the ultimate host, and no doubt the envy of every straight man in the room with models, fashionistas and movie stars constantly by his side. Co-host Drew Barrymore looked chic and sophisticated in a black Paco Rabanne cocktail dress. Jimmy Fallon of Saturday Night Live was sporting a new blond look for his role in the upcoming film about Edie Sedgwick, Factory Girl. The best-looking couple was model Jacquetta Wheeler and her photographer boyfriend, Alexi Lubomirski.
Carolina Herrera autumn/winter 2006/7Karolina Kurkova told me that she would only be modelling for menswear designer Thom Browne this season. However, I happen to know that she missed the show. Maybe it was because her double salchow wasn't quite where she wanted it, since the whole show was presented on ice.
Mother-to-be Gwen Stefani told me she would not be showing her own collection, Lamb, this season, since she had spent the first four months of her pregnancy touring, in six-inch heels. Her husband, Gavin Rossdale, about to leave for Los Angeles, "didn't even know it was Fashion Week", and asked if I thought he should change his ticket.
Despite my best efforts to spot the autumn trends, I left the party more confused than when I arrived. Francisco Costa, the designer for Calvin Klein, told me that his show was going to be "much more sleek and sexy, with lots of pant suits". Sam Shipley, one member of the quartet that makes up Trovata, said that the LA brand known for its preppy jackets and rugby shirts was "going to be very theatrical".
Narcisco Rodriguez confided his inspiration: "A woman who's a little naughty. She likes pink, but she also likes black. She's wearing a pretty dress with trashy lingerie underneath." Michael Kors described his girl of the season as "a combination of Ali McGraw and Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby".
Zac Posen, meanwhile, announced that he was "stripping everything down this season. It's going to be totally minimal", before hurrying off to his studio, to strip away. Finally, Lauren Davis, vice-president of communications for Carolina Herrera, explained that the Venezuelan designer's main look would be "a ball skirt that should be matched with a top that shows off the customer's personal style - whether it's a shell top, or a simple T-shirt". So much for a theme.
With no clear vision of what my wardrobe would look like in September, I took the next step and went to a couple of previews.
First was Oscar de la Renta, who declared: "The key to a successful collection is to reach a wide range of consumers, while maintaining a focus." He seemed to achieve his goal in this collection. There were chic furs and dramatic evening gowns for his core customers, plus a slew of young, elegant cocktail dresses for which Hollywood's It Girls will no doubt be vying. The standout was a sequinned gold number with a tulle scarf.
Next on the agenda was Proenza Schouler, which looked as if it would be one of the best collections of the season. This time around, the talented duo was inspired by the painter Mark Rothko and the photographer Peter Lindbergh, with a more sophisticated, structured look that had an edge. They paired leather motorcycle jackets with chic shift-dresses, and abandoned spring's tea-length skirt for much shorter styles.
At the end of all the previews, and all the questions, I was still no clearer about what next autumn's look would be. So I called the maestro, American Vogue's editor at large, André Leon Talley.
Clearly, he had not struggled as I had, and summed up the new season in a single sentence, "Fall is about a refined elegance, with a subtext of Balenciaga", which poses the question: what, in God's name, does that mean?
well that left me with the impression:

"what in god's name did Bee Shaffer mean?"

i think her writing is abit to contrived and meaningless to be honest. A tautology- not contributing in the way of information or creativity.

All of Bee's columns from the telegraph are online... I think. Not very interesting, IMO.

I like Bee better, but that choice is a bit premature. Premature based on the fact that I don't pay much mind to their parents, especially French Vogue. Also because I can't read it and two, I live in America. I don't like Anna Wintour much and find American Vogue boring at times, though not as bs as everyone makes it out to be.

Based on their daughters only, I still say Bee for numerous werid and plain vain reasons. For example, (1) I like the name Bee also, (2) I prefer Bee's look even though its plain and simple but elegant, and (3) my own opinion that the Roitfields always look tired.... I guess I'm just not as impressed with their style as everyone else is...

I know weird and vain reasons, but then again no body know the both of them personally... Can somebody post some more pictures of their style, so there could be bit more comparisons?

I tend to think that Bee is more classically beautiful, but one can make the argument that Julia is more exotic and edgy.

Julia no doubt. She has that unattainable vibe, a bit kate moss-esque crossed with jane birkin. Bee is just plain boring and she is a terrible writer.

Definitely Julia! She has that edgy, effortless thing going on that Bee doesn't have.
