Thanks for that.
Some interesting opinions are coming out with this issue and I've read some terrific articles. It has gone far beyond art/pornography and I don't think it was ever simply about that, anyway. It's enormously complicated and I think the backlash has revealed or highlighted really important aspects of Australia's culture. Or lack thereof.

i agree that some really interesting opinions are coming out...as much as i regret that bill's work has been taken down and that he is the focus of all this debate, i have to say i'm grateful for the focus it has provided for issues like this to be discussed....i sat down for dinner with my dad's extended family last night, who are always more likely to discuss farming or sport over anything art-related (they are country people)....and was really surprised that the big topic of the night seemed to be this issue of art, children in art, the sexualisation of children, whether children should be 'innocent' in their youth etc etc brought on by this recent controversy over bill's work....there were 3 generations at the table and everyone had something to say....this coming from a family who do not typically engage with art or the art world...
i was really impressed....i think it says a lot about the fragility and complexity of this issue....and for how deep these issues run....

Absolutely. I think art needs to be a part of everyday life, but not in this negative way. It's dismissed as pretentious and lightweight and this is painfully evident when you look at the general attitude towards things such as art education, funding, galleries and museums.

The charges have been dismissed-

But I can't imagine how you move on from this as an artist. There has been controversy before surrounding his work, but I'm not sure if it was to this extent.

People forget. They'll get wrapped up in the next subject of moral outrage and forget who Bill Henson even is, and chances are the people most outraged by this weren't even aware of his work in the first place so it's no loss. I think those who followed his work before all this will continue to take interest in and appreciate it.

I think that it's a given that those who follow art knew who he was, I'm just curious about his next work and what effect this will have. He's a professional and I doubt that he lets people's reactions dictate his work. But I think that any future exhibition will receive more publicity. I'm not sure how much impact Hetty Johnson's outrage has, but she has vowed to continue with her protest. I guess once the dust settles, we'll see if there have been any major changes.
