An article about Claire Dhelens in l'Express back in 1994, she was 26 at the time.
Quote:

The article about Claire Dhelens from L'Express in january 13th 1994, translated into English by me (tried my best...):

“I am already an old woman”, smiles Claire. She is 26 years old. From New York to Madrid, from Paris to Berlin, sophisticated or relaxed, she is on the cover of the biggest fashion magazines. Haughty, unreachable and beautiful, wearing Lanvin or Scherrer, she is walking down the catwalk at La Cour du Carré du Louvre, jumps on an airplane for a photo shoot at the other end of the world and hangs around with the jet-set.
Although she does not get as much press coverage as Estelle Hallyday or Lucie de la Falaise, Claire Dhelens belongs to the very small circle of French top models. A world where everyone seems beautiful, and everyone seems loaded with cash. A world of luxury, easy money and superb girls. Completely safe, it seems, from the crisis, unemployment and difficult month endings. In brief, at light-years of what the daily humdrum routine of average Frenchmen is made of.
Mannequin, top model, cover girl: the dream of any girl who is almost one meter seventy-five and very thin. Men fantasies, these super girls, make half of humanity feel down and insecure. But where are they from, those “girls that we see in Elle” as sung by Jacques Dutronc? But what planet do these aliens that we see on the covers of magazines and never on the subway come from? “From the Parisian suburbs. Rungis, to be precise”, answers Claire. Between a casting in Casablanca and the shooting of an advert in Los Angeles - the myth is respected - just enough time for her to tell us her story. It resembles a fairy tale. Without witches.
Once upon a time there was a young 16 year-old suburban girl looking for a job to be able to go on summer holidays. At a Bob Dylan concert, in Sceaux – “ I was really badly dressed, and I had just received an apple juice bottle over the head!” – her one meter seventy-seven and her androgynous silhouette are spotted by an agency and they propose her to make some photos. Ok it is an old chatting up technique – but this time it was for real. Telephone call to the parents, her mother, a former medical secretary, finally decides to give it a chance and, a few days later, she made her first photos for the magazine “20 Ans”: “A nightmare, but in one day I’ve earned enough money to go on a fifteen-day holiday trip with my mates in a camp-site in Le Touquet.” And this is only the beginning. Back to school, pictures shot by Paolo Roversi, a big name in fashion photography, will change the destiny of the high-school girl, who, between two classes, still jumps in the RER to slip by under the studio lights. And who, in the evening, go join her friends at the youth center. Within a year she makes the cover of “Depeche Mode” - “my first cover, you’ll always remember your first cover”, she says, the cover of “Elle” - now she does not count them any more - and a perfume ad for a TV in Israel make her drop school and earn … 300.000 Francs. She’s not even 17.
“You should not get used to luxury. But you should enjoy it, because it can stop any day.”, says the girl who resisted the “curvy body” trend. She remains the favourite model of Japanese creators and knew how to keep her old mates. The business? Yes, she knows about the repetitive flights by Concorde to New York and the luxury hotels. But also about shoots “at 4 o'clock in the morning”, to benefit from the light, and the summer fashion shoots in the Antarctic (or the winter collection presentation under the Tropics). She smiles at all the attention she and her friends get from the press. “From now on, one asks us for our opinion about anything.” By seeing that everything is happening mostly in the United States she’s somewhat worried. And she dreams to continue working while having fun.
