Ewen Spencer - Photographer
Ewen Spencer graduated from The University of Brighton School of Art and Design in 1996. His degree show project on the UKs Northern Soul scene introduced him as a perceptive documentor of dance subcultures. On starting out as a freelance photographer Ewen quickly gained commissions from magazines such as The Face, Sleaze, Details and I-D.
Ewens clubland documentary images regularly graced the pages of London and New Yorks style press and were included in SEEN Black Style UK published by Booth-Clibborn in 2001.
Tipped by Martin Parr as the most promising newcomer in the pages of Vissionaire magazine in 2002, Ewen has also gained a reputation for his work with bands such as The Streets, The White Stripes and Doves.
Images from Ewens project conserning British adolescents have been shown at SKETCH, the EXPOSURE photo festival at Hereford and at the JAM Tokyo London exhibition that took place at the Barbican in London and went on to Tokyo in 2002. Most recently they were nominated, exhibited and shortlisted for a prize at the Rencontre dArles 2004.
Ewen continues to pursue his interest in urban teen culture and has recently completed a series of images taking a look at a group of teenagers on Londons grime Scene. The project has come to fruition through the publishing of a book and a touring exhibition called Open Mic.
Recent commissions have included a booklet for the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix, documenting the 4 day event, artwork for The White Stripes latest album Get behind me Satan and an advertising campaign for Dutch financial group SNS Real.
