i dont know, anna, it's probably because the very first pic reminds me of a Days of Our Lives set!
and the second pic.. because it could've been taken by me.

i think those are fair reasons, you know

Hmm ill have to agree, it just seems very angsty and "Cry for me" although the images are quite nice, especially the stairrail which i did use for my avatar

it's so weird, i didn't get the "emo" thing at all...and i'm usually really wary of that...i don't like it, so i notice it a lot. and i didn't here. it doesn't seem emo to me at all. with the exception of the elderly man and the red shoes, they all are telling me a story that isn't "emo," not that those i just mentioned ARE emo and NOT telling me a story, it's just that i don't catagorise those the same way...i don't like them as well as the others. i love the first 2 with the woods, but they don't feel the same to me as the others. the second grouping are very very much a diptych to me..they go together so well, it almost made my heart stop when i first saw them. i'm really into grouping my work together in diptychs and triptychs, and i'm always very taken with photos (and other types of work) that really interact with each other well, regardless of if that's the original intention or not. out of the ones that mirrra posted i really love red hair, skinned knees, wine glass, haircut and yarn (i made up the titles myself)...like i said, they all speak to me...the others are much more straightforward, sort of portraity type pictures that are really very beautiful, but aren't having the same effect on me as some of the others.

whew! that was quite a critique...but i'm glad i did it..it's making me more aware of them, in some way.

It obviously depends on your definition of 'emo'. I see it as a superficial thing which is used by people to appear artistic or profound; people lying on the ground, sobbing with your head down in a dark corner of the room, blood on the knees. I notice it especially in the languid poses, combined with the subject and props in the picture of course, because e.g. the pic with the pleated curtain is very strong in my opinion and not emo.

The pics in #2 would indeed be a perfect diptych It'd be much better that way. Separate I don't get them.

Maybe LJ has ruined it for me. Because I saw so many of those type of pictures (2, 3, 4, 5 by Mirrra and the one with the feet and hair) I can't appreciate the real thing anymore :p

I love the photo with the red shoes. The light
(the first pic, post #4).

art school blah
these photographs look like a freshman in college took them. its all about self-pity and self-loathing. sexual repression, blah blah blah. not original at all. i will say that the colors are nice but i can't believe an agency like art and commerce would take on such an unexperienced person?? and one with no real style at that.

let's just get something straight, poses came first and then silly labels.

just because someone's lying against his arms, it doesnt necessarily mean he's sobbing or feeling sorry for whatever he's into. it can be anything. as much as i dont like the first set because of the soap opera feel, i think the next ones are pretty good, i fail to see the priority on the model's pose rather than the lighting, gorgeous colours and the quiet mood.

The model's poses create a big part of the mood in these pics, for me that is, because that's mostly what the camera focuses on. As for the colors and optical effects, they're indeed very fine! (the 5th from #3 and *repeats self* the one with the pleated curtains )

Still in my opinion the majority of the poses is very myspace livejournalish That's just the vibe I get. The mood is quiet but I'd rather associate it with world-weariness.

P.S. it's good having a bit of a debate after the many agreed agreements

i'm glad you like them kimkhuu.

perlefine, i agree about the refreshing nature of dis-agreeing for once:p

i do understand what you mean when you say the poses are too contrived. it certainly isn't a kind of photography that just happens, there's a construction behind it. but interestingly i haven't perceived the images as very dramatic even if there might be drastic things happening ... somehow i find there's a stillness and objectivity overlapping the sense of drama and this is exactly what creates the suspense for me...

i can see what you mean about the myspace/livejournal-ness to some of them, and that really makes me sad...the stigma surrounding those websites shouldn't infiltrate fine art photography! if that's what you mean by "emo" i understand. however, i don't feel as if those images are fulfilling that stigma...they are still very different for me.

this is perfect...disagreeing means discussion, which is what we want! in terms of jennybalance's take on it, i VEHEMENTLY disagree...that is a really banal argument and it holds no water for me, personally. i was in a photography program and my classmates work wasn't NEARLY as interesting as this...no one i knew in any photo program was doing as good of work as this is. this work could be considered easy, yes...but it is by no means boring, inexperienced student work.
