Even if you don't consider them photographers, they are still amazing artists.

agreed. and i know for sure that they're geniuses at knowing how to use light- i don't care if it's photoshop or not, the lighting of their photos is so immaculate it gives everything a surrealistic, dreamy quality.

just so that we are on the same page...

their strength is not in their lighting but their post production... they have the talent of digitally recreating people

let us not mistaken that for extraordinary lighting

I love the surrealism Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott project in their images. I always look forward to seeing their stories in magazines.

I was under the impression that the Bjork pictures are by David Sims, not Mert and Marcus

I think that Mert & Marcus are easily some of the greatest photographers of our time.

If you actually spend some time scouring their compositions, you see alot of subtle genious in the way they compose, line things up (model to background) Subtle symbolism, Galmour and finally, most importantly I believe...Amazingly well crafted imagery.

I truly believe they revived fashion a few years back. I love their work, possibly STILL my fav shooters at the moment.

Perfecto!

They were definitely on the forefront about 4 years ago.

I remember looking through Pop Magazine and seeing Giselle editorial where she's by the pool in a Modernism setting. THAT editorial was the one that started it all. That got copied so many times now, that it's become a cliche. Alas and Piggot's style was something new and beautiful. It stood out, just the way LaChappelle did, unique color and style wise. A & P's Pirelle stint was a triumph for this year. One of the best calenders in recent memory. Beautiful use of black and white. These guy's aren't just colorists. They keep thing minimal, yet use approach to line and composition that is SO INDEBTED to Newton. I could even go to say, yes, these guys are HEAVILY stealing from Newton, but we'll just say, homage, because I believe these guy's are putting some really, really good art out there.

while their 'minimal' work is still too perfect and cold for my taste, i really like them when they're kitschy and over the top as in the pop editorial with jessica stam a few months ago...

I'm in love with these, even if they are photoshopped to death.
