High Fashion
June 2009 ![]() I thought maybe I should type out what he says: " What should be done in the crisis? Big brands should continue to support the independent press, because that’s where the..(watermark I can’t read the text). Paradoxically it’s a good time for magazines and fashion. I would say to the big brands to stop scattering money everywhere. Don’t be afraid of spending where it should be spent and where the creation is alive, where there is desire, sexuality, artists, girls, ideas. It’s not even a question of rethinking but the question of being healthy and normal. It will be good for them and us. It’s an authentic exchange, the ‘redistribution of wealth’ (in a communist term.) If they redistribute well, they will be able to redistribute energy" hudie

Olivier Zahm about L'Hivier de l'Amour (Winter of Love) exhibition and more ...
in theanyspacewhatever exh. cat. Our sensitivity, our identity, our subjectivity was the source material of an aesthetic experience that aimed to be contagious, participatory, emotive, and which was meant to have an effect, secretly, abstractedly, but really - through the essantial detour of art, which seemed to us to be the only way to go. In other words, through a collective endeavor, at once entirely intimate, existensial, subjective, but not personal, egocentric, or individualist. [...] We were ambitious and we failed. Do I have to tell you why I think we did ? It's related to my present position, as head of the fashion magazine Purple Fashion, to the fact that I, too, joined the system. At least it seems that I have. And, in the end, I'm in a poor position to critize my generation. [...] Out of fear of coming off as a dangerous revolutionary wearing Ray-Bans, I'll only say that the beauty, fragility, and complexity of the fundamental gestures of the 1990s, exemplified by the work of F. Gonzalez-Torres, have almost entirely disappeared. [...] So, what is to be done? There is an urgency now to break out of the intense, chaotic, and superficial pathos of Great Mixture. The urgency of artistis rupture ot reinvent, reaffimr, and articulate whithin false relationships, pseudo-undergrounds, vague interactions. There will be no new art, worthy of its name, if it doesn't make this effort. It is an attempt at exodus, a social desertion, and an irrevocable rejection at a time when every aspect of society is today indisctinct from every artistic gesture. |
