Does he tell his models how to pose, I noticed a lot of his images models have simple poses and others have extreme poses if you know what I mean. I've also seen a photo of him that spells 'hold it right there' http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_PHccDIWXWv...marchelier.gif
Am I right in thinking he doesn't let models pose without direction but he directs them?
That's pretty common ... the photographer is the director of the shoot ... not the model. It's her job to do what she is directed to do.
Sometimes photographers let the model do their own thing, but almost all of the time they direct them and only let the model move in slight increments... trying out different head tilts, for example, moving their eyes, or hands slightly. It can be slightly colaborative, but it's the photographer who makes the decision when to open the shutter at the right moment. And it's the photographer who is critiqued when the photo is good ... or bad.
A good model can figure out what the photographer wants and can bring his vision to be shot.

Thanks so much BetteT, so this happens on every single shoot, I've often been told high fashion top models pose without direction but not sure why people say this.
They can ... and will, if the photographer tells them to move on their own. But the photographer is still "directing" her by telling her to do that.
Yeah I know what you mean by that. I was just realising often Patrick's models poses are similar and also I think the likes of Mario Sorrenti's models have similar poses in each shoots as well, fascinating. Patrick is probably my favourite photographer, love his work.
