I can see what your saying (although I couldnt really comment on the things that drive American photographers, being english and all) but I think one of the appeals of photography is that there isnt really a divide between photographers around the world. There are plenty of European photographers influenced by American photograhers and you can see that come through in there work, the same obviously applys vice versa aswell.

I think its also important to remember that there were a lot of 'ametuer' photographers pushing photography further than some profesionals (ametuer meaning that there main income isnt through photography) because they dont have to abide by the rules of the industry or the people that are paying them to take the photographs in the first place.

Too true, so chic! There's no doubt that Vincent Peters is a superb technician but his images are a little 'plastic' for me. Personally I long for natural light and a little mystery: Duane Michaels, Herbert List and Bill Brandt float my photography boat.

hey guys, i am Jeph

it's good to see quite a few people like Vincent peters' works like i do...

if you look very closely, you will realise that Mr. Vincent, has a special way of looking a model/woman and a special way of using the light.

since first time i looked his work back in '98, i have been try to sort of study his way of working as a photographer, from the old All-Done-In-One shot to now, mostly Digitally finished... he dose stay the same style but make it better; it's very hard for a, in fact most of photographers!!

I thought it might be interesting to note that some of his shots (or even more than the one I know of) are composed - separate background + model -> combined in photoshop (plus lot of photoshop work to make the light softer)

I like his vision very much.

and about the european-american discussion - Vincent Peters actually began his career in New York

and there is no "european" photography, please don't put so many different nations in a pot ...
there is roughly speaking london, paris, milano, hamburg, barcelona and stockholm. totally different from one another and totally different what people think is good and creative and worth paying...

but overall, maybe europeans are more creative? I don't think so, I really don't.
I just believe we feel more free in a lot of things, not just art/photography...

and europe has a long history to look back, whereas "america" is very young...
american art cannot have so much depth, since it is so young, a young soul who probably has not much tradition to identify with... just a thought..
if you wanna discuss...

@stilista: germany doesn't value their own photographers, they have to leave country in order to gain recognition. sad but true.
about sweden - they have a unique style no other country can offer, that's why they probably come out of the woodwork, as you put it. funny to imagine by the way
