Just one step away from commarse and a few from what's worse

Absolutely.
The cover remind me of the medieval female icon 'la dame sans mercy' (The lady without mercy). It was the woman a knight would worship and desire without ever being allowed to physically fulfill his desire: a delightfully sophisticated form of mental and emotional torture.
You got to hand it to Cate: she is the got-to girl if you want a sexually alluring ice goddess (if I make sense)

It makes sense to me, because Cate is very good at balancing both art and commerce in her career choices. These past years Cate has been committing herself to projects who were conceived as money making ventures (ex.:Lord of the Rings) and/or were financially very successful (ex.: Babel) without ever prostituting her talent. I mean, she's been in mainstream movies but I never thought: 'wow, she's only done this one because she badly needed the money'.

I saw pale kings and princes too,
Pale warriors, death-pale were they all;
They cried—“La Belle Dame sans Merci
Hath thee in thrall!”

I think it is stunning and striking at last a cover that actually stands on on the shelves metaphorical shelves or not.
