not crazy about emma's main editorial but i do like the cover if only for the fact there's some warmth and life to her even if she's trying to be 'fierce'. also like the way that neon hoop intersects the masthead and frames the image.

tbh i'm so over Fabien Baron at Interview. can't even remember the last issue i truly enjoyed reading/viewing. maybe c. 2005....

Now THIS is how you a September cover. With W and others having this throwback to the past, this actually loves vintage and modern at the same time.

And I'm not gonna lie, I'm interested to see what they do with the Brant brothers. They're so ridiculous but I can't help it- guilty pleasure.

Back To The Future is not good.
Mainly because of the cast. Nimue us alright but Frida lacks of exitement.

I feel like M&M's ed would be great for a month like August or October, but for September...it's just not that special. I always looked forward to their big eds in March and September but this year their work for the magazine has definitely been missing something. I hope McDean's is not a studio one. Anyway, there's always Steven Klein, who just like in March, will deliver the goods.

^ I disagree to a certain extent. No publication has the budget nowadays to humour M&M's Bergman/Scott/Spielberg 40 page fantasies, so their work is going to be much simpler. Which is probably for the better in some ways. This editorial reminds me of some of their studio work for W during the mid 2000s. Their black & white clean studio portraits are always impressive, especially when the styling and referencing is as strong as Templer's. The only problem I have with the editorial is the shot of Frida which is a clear rip-off of a pair of classic Solve merged beauty shot...

I see shades of Penn's 1960s work and references to Sims and Meisel in terms of composition...which is fine, the duo are plagiarists by trade after all :p . In short, I like it...merely judging by 2011/12's meager editorial standards though, I guess.

Really loving Emma's cover story...although I don't see any Blade Runner influences here. It's too easy to throw around the name of cutting edge films and visuals when looking at anything influenced by the early 1980s. Even if I can't nail down a reference point, I do dig the atmosphere. The smoking close-up is quite hypnotic. Jansson must be the only reguarly working, top photographer who continues to impress me in this era of the banal.

Thanks Marc10 and pellucid. Looking forward to the rest...

I'm so in love with "Back to the Future" I'm such a sucker for 60's-inspired editorials and Nimue looks like Penelope Tree in some shots, which is definitely positive.

Having the issue now, I'm a bit let down by the editorial content. It feels like the Brant and Observers (fashion journalists) features are taking the spot of full, modeled editorials.

If you're interested in the theme of New Order - icy blondes in black and black leather protecting their stony building with lots of big guns and ammo belts.
