Don't know if I should post in this thread: I am currently in my parent's place in my hometown where I store most of my magazine collection. As I am flipping through some old issues, I found that some pages are stick together probably because of humidity? It breaks my heart to see pages being damaged when I try to split the sticked pages and find marks or stains on the pages afterwards. I want to ask if anyone know how to prevent this from happening? I guess this must be a very common issue for old magazines and books, especially for thin paper type as Vogue US or Paris use?

BTW, I will try to post pics of my collection once I am back to my place.

Starry: Yes, it's probably humidity. You were talking about the inner pages, but I suggest putting acid-free papers between magazines, as covers are glossy and tend to stick one to another. Try placing the mags on bookshelves or somewhere where they can stand vertically, not horizontally one on another, because of the pressure.
My magazines are fine but I was always wondering, are glossies simply prone to damaging because of the nature of their paper? I found some magazines from 60s and nothing was wrong with them, but nowadays magazines are printed on a different kind of paper, especially the covers.

Starry & Srdjan: Yes, it's most certainly humidity! I've had the same problem in my previous apartment, but it my case it was mostly the back cover of one issue, and front of another. I know the feeling, because the issue is just about ruined after that. In the new house, they're in my room and it's quite airy with loads of natural light. At some stage of the morning the sun would hit them directly (I never close my blinds and curtains, it's on an upper lever anyway). Here too I need to watch out because discolouration could set in around the edges.
Anyway, back to your problem. You'll need to make peace with the fact that those issues cannot be salvaged now. Most likely the stuck pages are dry already, and there's not much you can do it boxed (I'm assuming). But going forward, try to leave a gap behind the magazines on your rack (this is a universal rule for all books). It helps with air culculation, especially if humidity is an issue. Have a look at LastNight's set up above, that's what you'll want. Whether the mags are stacked vertical or horizontal, always leave some free space above, and pull them forward to align with the edge of the rack. You can also try to move it more towards a window, just watch out for sunlight. Failing that, you
My solution? Adhesive book covering film. You get this in various sizes.

Sorry, I wasnt quite finished. Wanted to say failing that, you should try some silica gel. I think you get these in small sachets when you buy leather bags and shoes. Keep one or two of those close to the magazines, should do the trick. Good luck!

Hi guys, thanks for all your tips on how to preserve magazines in good quality. Really appreciate it!

And finally, I could upload some pictures of my magazine collection. I have been collecting them for almost 10 years. I put most of them in my parents' apartment in my hometown. It's still growing every month and there is not enough space to put all of them in display. A lot of them have been put into carton boxes and store in another room. You can see in one picture part of the book shelf is even broken because of the weight of all the magazines (blame it to those thick Vogue Italia issues ). I will have it fixed soon.

Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Starry, fantastic collection! I'm curious, do your bookshelves have doors? How do they look on the outside? I need to order shelves for my magazines and can't decide whether to go for an open or closed bookcases.

The bulk of my humble collection (minus a varied stack of numero and oyster), mostly found in vintage stores, markets, clearance issues at Magnation and select issues i bought in aus as well as on overseas trips. Can't bring myself to buy back issues for exorbitant amounts, so i love the thrill of finding old issues - whether it's Carla Bruni's British Vogue cover for AUD50c or a 1956 Vogue by Irving Penn for free.

Hi russianelf, my book shelves have doors. It depends on how you want to display your magazines and probably your preference and the design of your room to decide if you should go with shelves with doors or not. But either way, it's better to keep the air in the place circulated and de-dust from time to time.
