Honestly, good for POP. I can't think of a more timely pair of cover subjects.

Every other magazine cover is a slick photo of a model or actress covered in borrowed for the occasion clothing, catalogs masquerading as artistic expression. Here are two girls who are newsworthy in their own right, photographed organically and hopefully asked questions about things other than who or what they're wearing. I like the idea that fashion can be cultural, it can be about art, music, expression and politics.

The cover seems a bit 90's riot grrrl inspired, in a DIY sense. Which I guess fits in with some of the ideas surrounding Pussy Riot. While I don't really love the designs end result I can appreciate the sentiment they were going for. And I also applaud the fact that Pop chose to go a more original route with coverstars, both women are very relevant at the moment and it'll be interesting to read what they have to say.

I agree completely. This is the first time I've actually wanted to read an interview with someone on the cover of a fashion magazine, because they're actual, relevant people, and not perfectly groomed clothes horses, too PR-trained to say anything remotely of interest.

^^^ But POP is a fashion magazine.

Raw and real imagery is fine. Have a photojournalist shoot Pussy Riot then. I don't need pseudo-intellectual, one-trick pony Teller to snap candids to validate the urgency and importance of the subject matter. Teller's signature is as superficial and plastic as Mert & Marcus'.

From Teller, to the layout and art direction, it all screams pretentiousness to me-- not authenticity. It's only because it's Juergen Teller and POP, that they're able to get away with this insipid and lazy design. If it were just an indie magazine, everyone would be slamming it for just how lazy, clueless and outdated the execution is. I expect a fashion magazine to make a some effort in design and execution, and not to insult me with irony.

Is this still a fashion magazine or a political pushing agenda?

I LOVE that it's not a predictable choice -- not the "it" girl of the moment, nor the same woman we've had shoved down our throats repeatedly to the point of nausea. Here are relevant, intelligent, inspiring women. And topped off by the choice of Teller who is as real and raw of a photographer as you get these days, I am absolutely delighted with this.

This is photography at its worst. I don't even care about the cover subject, I am just bewildered that Jürgen Teller created something so cheap. It looks like it was taken with a phone camera.
