I was just about to say, it's an almost complete replica of a vintage Avedon cover.

Blouin Artinfo

Quote:
Photographer David Slijper has taken inspiration from a Richard Avedon image and paid homage to the famed photographer for the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar with Anne Hathaway.

Avedon took the image of his muse, Dovima, on a ladder whilst adding the “A” to Bazaar for the December 1959 cover of the magazine.

The subscriber's cover looks a bit like an entry from America's Next Top Model - good pose but poor face (and for such a gorgeous girl!) Both pictures are very commanding though. Not excellent, but at least it's more eye catching than Elle UK's February offering.

One of the covers above shows a subtle interplay of lines and angles between the photography and typography, while the other shows a woman being visually overpowered by a big ladder.

I agree, the angle of the ladder in Anne's is off, making it much more prominent.

The longer you look at the vintage cover, the more you see all the tiny ways in which the shapes and proportions echo each other, the A of the outfit, the dimension of lines in the text to match the ladder...

Alright, so I've come to the conclusion that this is what Elle should have been like months ago. The staff who transferred have made this into a better version of Elle. Bazaar was the better magazine. But I feel as though I'm looking at a revamped Elle. The structure throughout resembles Elle too much. Bazaar used to have a fullness about it, a certain sophistication that ozzed on each page. Now.. it's empty! Almost like Lucy Yeomans' has upped and left with everything.. including the computer software.

I have a feeling we're about to see a whole lotta' vintage themed pictures throughout Justine Picardie's reign. She's mentioned Diana Vreeland on multiple occasions. Vreeland must be her new obsession.. after Coco Chanel.

The original cover with the concept looks so much more glamourous and natural than Anne's version. I really like "The Collections" ed.

while i'm really enjoying Anne's style evolution and am glad to see a under-appreciated photog like David Slijper get a chance at the cover these elements aren't enough to save this lackluster cover. the original cover sprang from innovation, a whirlwind of intense creative synergy of ideas exchanged between editors, models, photogs who dared to push the boundaries of fashion and graphic design. That Avedon cover was a cultural beacon which Liz Tilberis and her creative team paid homage to with her debut issue for HB. These two 'latter' covers were original and culturally relevant; people are still talking about their impact. Somehow i don't think the same will be true for this 2012 imitation...so far the contents are just same old, same old.

She's GOT to stop lifting her chin up like that, it makes it appear as if her eyes are sliding off of her face.
