UK Tatler October 2008 : Gemma Arterton

The Bond girl that nobody's heard of... and nobody can believe has been chosen. I have no idea who she is - and good on Tatler for going for an unknown on the cover - but somehow I was expecting something more sophisticated than a 'backstreet Cleopatra' look. Looking at other pictures, she's better than this.

She might be better than expected (remember all the fuss about Daniel Craig before Casino Royale came out?) but on first impressions she is no Eva Green...

For a minute there I thought it was Zara Phillips after a weird makeover . I'm sure she looks better otherwise if she's a Bond girl, though, as others have said.

I feel a bit bad for Gemma, yes this is her first really huge role and it's in a Bond film but the constant comparisons to Eva Green have to suck. Who can compare to Eva Green really? Eva has this sort of mystique surrounding her that is very hard to emulate - her image is more set in stone whereas a newcomer like Gemma doesn't even have an image yet.

But enough about that - I think Gemma is a very pretty girl who has been done up to look horrid on this cover. Everything about this is wholly unflattering. If I were her I'd be hunting down the photographer with a sharp, pointy stick.

I don't know, I must be one of the few who doesn't get the appeal of Eva Green, I don't feel 'mystery', I see a crazy-eyed lunatic, the type of girl a man would meet and really like, until one night he goes to the window, and realises she's been standing outside his house for hours, staring, with those eyes, and he realises she's actually insane.

But anyway, Tatler ruined Maggie Gyllenhaal not so long ago, and now Gemma. I thought they had a regular formula that produced glam (if uninspired) covers, I wonder what's going wrong to produce these occasional horrors?

The cover is seriously all colours of wrong, and my god the hair looks like a wig, i just want to yank it off!

I have no clue who this girl is, but the styling on the cover is terrible!! That is an awful, awful wig, who did this to her?!?!?

I like the dress, what I can see of it. Can anyone ID it?

I can't believe Tatler would actually print this, it's awful!!! I feel kind of bad for her though, definitely not the kind of impression you want to make on a magazine cover.
