Men's Vogue coming soon

from today's wwd:

Quote:
Now that Domino is up and kicking, talk within Condé Nast is centering on the company’s likely next big launch — Men’s Vogue — and it’s a subject that doesn’t exactly thrill several Condé Nast sales executives, sources said. That’s because, in terms of both readers and ad dollars, Men’s Vogue is seen as a possible threat to not only GQ, but also to Vanity Fair. Several executives have even gone as far as to suggest that Vogue and Men’s Vogue publisher Tom Florio has been positioning it to advertisers as just that: “the men’s Vanity Fair.”

Florio, though, scoffed at that notion, saying, “We would never position Vogue against anything else but Vogue.” He did, however, acknowledge the two magazines share a similar spirit. “When you read Vanity Fair, you feel like you’re part of that world, not trying to catch a glimpse from the red carpet.” Similarly, he said, “[Men’s Vogue] is not meant to be aspirational.”

With a target audience of affluent men older than 35, and a part controlled circulation-part newsstand model, the first issue will arrive in September. Around 400,000 copies will be distributed on newsstands and an additional 200,000 copies will be sent to an elite group of Condé Nast subscribers. Four issues of Men’s Vogue — which will cover fashion, architecture, art, food and home — are planned for next year.

“There are some resources behind this,” one executive said. “Certainly more than they had for Teen Vogue.”

Audience tests and advertiser response have given the project momentum. Jay Fielden, who is editing the title under editorial director Anna Wintour, recently hired Ned Martel from the Financial Times, and Vogue art director Russell Labosky and associate and men’s wear editor Stephen Watson also are working on the first issue.

Ad dollars and readers may not be the only things Men’s Vogue and fellow Condé Nast titles squabble about. Wintour is said to be possessive of her photographers, including Mario Testino, who just began shooting for GQ again after a prolonged absence from its pages. Testino shot Hayden Christensen for GQ’s May cover and the portfolio inside. Wintour, though, is said to want Testino exclusively for the Vogue brand. A spokeswoman for GQ would not comment on whether he would be shooting for GQ again.

“Obviously it’s important that [Men’s Vogue] has the fingerprint of Vogue, and that’s a very big part, the roster of photographers,” said Fielden.

Florio, not one to think small, added that additional titles under the Vogue banner could be further down the pike, including a living magazine. Watch out, House & Garden — which is, after all, Wintour’s old stomping ground. “What you’ll see is other brands roll out,” he said, “presuming this works, and they’ll be done with the same kind of taste and style.”
i didn't know Vanity Fair was for women...i thought it was more unisex...

This is why there is so many stereotypes in fashion...why do they have to say that Vogue is only for women and GQ is only for men?????? if you want to read a magazine...read it........guys should have a chance to like fashion...it's so dumb...i am a girl, but my ex always used to go through my magazines when he was waitin for me to get ready....( usually Harpars Bazzar and he was always kind of fascinated with Dior and the way it was styled and it's not like he wanted to wear the clothes, he just thought that it was cool......) it just bothers me that there are so many "boundaries" when it comes to men and fashion...makin a men's vogue isn't a bad idea...but sayin " it's the men's vanity fair" is like sayin "you used to read a girl magazine, but you're not a girl, haha"...at least in mu opinion

thanks for the info kimair...
there seems to be so many new titles lately...
vitals...men and women...shop, etc...and all the teen mags...

i assume that a men's vogue is long overdue and that there is definitley a market for it..
expecially with the advent of the metrosexual...although i think that's a bit more of a younger market...affluent men over the age of 35 is a healthy demographic though...and i would assume this is a magazine that will have some legs...

it really seems like the menswear market is so much more interesting than womenswear these days...i wonder who they will get to shoot and edit stories...

this should be good...just hope it's not too painfully stuffy or commercial...

This is great news. It's about time there was an American magazine devoted to men's fashion. GQ is ok, but it's more of a lifestyle mag that just happens to include fashion, and L'Uomo Vogue is rediculously expensive, if you can even find it. All I know is, I'll be looking forward to it.

but theres already l'uomo vogue and an international version in english, i've found both to be pretty pointless and they remain unread on the side for a month. maybe this new format will be more user-friendly? hopefully my newsagent bill will go down though...

Thanks for the info!

It doesn't seem like they are real thrilled with the concept. Only 4 issues for the first year??? I guess they are playing it safe.

I also think they should target the 20 and older group instead of well-lead men above 35. It'd make it more wide-spread and have more influences engulfing a larger age group.

Overall- the only thing i can say is ...FINALLY!!

Im so excited, it's about time! I got tired of interpreting womens trends into menswear. Id love to see menswear in a magazine beyond Burberry Prorsum, Gucci, Helmut Lang, Prada, Dior Homme and Dolce & Gabbana.

Im so excited, Ill get a subscription. I just don't want it to be like all other mens magazines and very confused about thier sexuality and love to talk about other peoples, Id rather them leave sexual orientation out at all costs.

I'm interested to see how this turns out, but i'm not so thrilled about the part about catering to the 35 and older wealthy demographic either. I'm more fascinated with the pulse of the youth culture. L'Uomo Vogue seems to balance the demographics quite well.
