today I was going through Keira's editorial... and I, suddenly, remember of Natalia July's editorial... and came to wonder why, oh why, Vogue US has so old fashionned clichés... they very often style the outfits good... well if you have your second house in the Hamptons (MY cliché about american wasp's style... and i'm talking about the most avant-garde hamptons girls...) it's perfect...
but why so old fashionned clichés??? it's really really weird... I mean Keira in an old way African safari with "tribal" africans around her and dressed contemporary but it feels as she was in a 30-40s movie... it's weird... really weird to still think and shoot those things.... I just wanted to share this opinion sorry... I was borred this noon at the office... do not blame me... they make beautiful pictures... but it's so old, I think...

^ I would have to agree BerlinRocks. I didn't enjoy Keira's editorial for that very reason. I know they were going for the classic Out of Africa theme but overall that idea is rather trite in this day and age. The world is so much more global now, it would have been much more interesting for them to depict contemporary Africa rather than to just rehash the same old tired themes we've seen before. In my opinion it shows a lack of creativity on their part, every summer it seems they have the same exact editorial but in different locales and every year I find myself yawning at the same beautiful (the natural beauty is undeniable) yet patronizing scenarios.

In Hello! magazine, they ran extra images from the time Keira was in Africa, and it showed her getting closer to the animals, being a bit scared and then thrilled as she made contact with them. But the realistic tone of those images meant they would never make it into US Vogue, because in Vogue the portrayal of the story has to be perfect, with not a hair out of place.

I couldn't find them on the Hello! website or on keiraforever.com, though I didn't have time to search the fan website at great length. I think I still have the magazine at home, might be able to take some phone snaps of it.

BerlinRocks (and Luxx in response) --thanks for being the only person in the thread to question the absurd and really elitist and tokenizing premise of this cover and associated editorial.
Racialicious and a commenter at NYT Fashion Blog pretty much calls the ed out as: Vogue's glorification of colonial racism (LINK). I'll never subscribe to US Vogue... |

Fashion is, by nature, elitist. It's all about exclusion. It plays with serious themes in a superficial manner. This cover - as well as a recent series of 'tribal' editorials in UK Vogue - played on stereotypes of other cultures. Yes, they could have put more thought in, and come up with a new angle on the same old story, but it's Vogue - it exists to forcefeed us handbags and shoes, rather than act as a textbook for civil rights. I wasn't happy at the sight of these things either, but I know Vogue has no reason to have a conscience. It's an optional extra.

^^ Not really bored, but I felt a bit guilty because I hardly ever contribute anything other than my smartarse comments. I thought I would do a bit of hard work for once.

Well appreciated, only for a minute there I thought this was the JUNE 2008 thread, in which case I was quite excited about Keira being on the cover!

I thought this was the June 2008 thread too, a few hours ago when I came onto TFS. I wondered how I had missed it, and how it had more than 5 pages already
