did you guys read the story about the models?
they were saying something like:"Gemma Ward is not considered a super model because she is not a household name...""...she was picked originally from the Prada campaign where people tried to find the girls who looked exactly the same..."...and if you ask an average American they wouldn't recognize the name Gemma Ward

Did Gemma do anything wrong to piss off Anna Wintour? Come on, she is probably more famous than any of the girls on the cover. She does not deserve the comments like that! It will potentially damage her career!
poor Gemma

^ No. If it's in this issue, I didn't have a chance to read the article because I can't locate it in stores yet.

I didn't like a lot of the comments about the models -- something about Lily being the smartest and knowing it, plus other little remarks made about some of the girls.

Have you tried searching at your local Barnes & Noble? I couldn't find the magazine at a few stores, but I finally spotted it at B&N yesterday.

I didn't really like that part of the article either. I just think though what they meant was.. look at Gemma Ward.. she is at the TOP TOP of the modelling industry now and STILL she is not a true supermodel because the average person does not know who she is. I interpreted the quote as .. not a diss on Gemma.. but just the state of the modelling industry at the moment. Its biggest star is still a virtual unknown in the public. She is just a face.

The thing I found intersting about that comment is the fact that Gemma was on the previous model cover. They were kind of calling her the next supermodel in that issue. I don;t think it will hurt her career though. She's Gemma Ward.

I still haven't found it at any stores yet either. I'll check back in a day or 2. Is the Gap selling it also or are they just displaying the cover?

but the logic isn't right here. so they call the cover girls super models although they are less known than Gemma? i'm not even a Gemma fan but i found this part extremely disturbing. and Who is Nian Fish exactly?

Oh. I definitely did not like that comment I thought it was a tad bit snide I also disliked him saying 'one wonders what would happen to Jessica Stam had she not been discovered' (paraphrasing)

Obviously....she would be a student or working.

the "Hit Girls" article was very clear, "Gisele Bundchen is the latest model with a household name, who will be the next?" and that's true, Gemma is not a Supermodel, models on the top of the high-fashion bussiness are called TOP-Models, and that's what the Vogue cover line says.

not sure why it's so complicated for some people to distinguish "Supermodel" from "Top Model"

I really dislike it when people attribute jealousy to criticism. Just because someone doesn't like a model doesn't mean they're jealous.
Thanks, TGA. It bugs me too. We're all allowed to express our opinion and no one here is allowed to censor anybody when it comes to our views on fashion. Besides, people here mainly just don't find Chanel Iman attractive--but we're not saying anything terrible. eg. ("We hate her. She should die."-- Something that was said before on the Etc's of the Modelling World and was later deleted by a mod, I think.)

well, if an average person doesn't know Gemma Ward, how could one knows the difference b/w top model and supermodel?
now i know what you meant...but the article IS very confusing and not very well written.

I mean popular as in commercial and high fashion, much closer to the form of the true supermodels.

Like TGA said, criticism does not always equal jealously. You can just not understand a certain models appeal, as many do not with Chanel.
I agree but, as has been stated, it's one thing to not get a model's appeal. I don't get MANY models' appeal. There's a whole thread dedicated to it on the forum. But there seems to be a lot of acerbic comments about her looks, career, personality, etc to the point where it seems a bit odd. I've been in her thread since she first started getting press last year, and there've been so many heated comments. In this thread itself, she caught a lot of heat for things she can't control. You'd think she was Satan himself. I've never seen a model whose detractors go out of their way to bash her, many times. I just think it's odd is all.
