Vanity Fair April 2008 : Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey & Amy Poehler by Annie Leibovitz

Quote:
VF's Very Funny Girls

Helluva Green Room, Annie Leibovitz! Vanity Fair trots out our top female funnies in their April issue, knighting Tina Fey, Sarah Silverman and Amy Poehler on the cover as the new guard in comedy queens.

As seen in the above glossy, the ladies channel pop tarts for the photog (it's doubtless Amy Winehouse ever got a laugh for poliical parody). Sarah does her best Amy, complete with pinup-girl tattoos, The Office sweetheart Jenna Fischer goes Lindsay Lohan (center) and Wanda Sykes gets nasty as Lil Kim (right).

“There is no question that there are a million more funny women than there used to be,” writer Nora Ephron says of the featured femmes, also including E!'s Chelsea Handler (second from left) and Sandra Bernhard (left).

Alessandra Stanley's cover story explores the recent inundation of female-driven comedy that, while capturing mass audiences (good move on f***ing Matt Damon, Sarah), relies heavily on sex appeal.

30 Rock creator Tina thinks you can thank Jennifer Aniston for that.
"In the '90s, it seemed like every person on a sitcom — think of the cast of Friends —was just really foxy," Tina says.

Joan Rivers echoes the sentiments.

"Nowadays, you can’t even get on open mike with less than a C cup," the Botoxed comedy vet said.

The issue, C cups and all, hits newsstands nationwide next Tuesday.

Sandra Bernhard is doing something to me, in that photo, and I never knew I was that way inclined.

I love Sandra but why from the back?! And her reflection in the mirror just takes her further out of this photo IMO. They could have got better people to portray Lohan IMO. Wanda Sykes is cute as Lil Kim...wasnt she going to be Beyonce I read in the Cover Rumor Thread though? Hmm. Thanks for posting, MMA.

Ugh, who did Chelsea Handler have to sleep with in order to land this ed? She isn't even d-list level...speaking of, this issue is a massive FAIL without Kathy Griffin.

I really want to see a bigger pic of the cover. Love love love Tina Fey though. So glad these ladies are getting the recognition they deserve. How often do you see funny women (compared to funny men) on the cover of mags?

I like the way this is a theme that hasn't been covered by Vanity Fair before, and I hope the articles have been given free rein to discuss female comedy in a wide context, rather than relying on the same physical charms to sell the issue in the way they'll deride in their own editorial.

I'm kind of loving this. The cover looks fab, and, as others have already said, Sarah is a dead ringer for Amy Winehouse.

Now, if they had gotten Kathy Griffin to be Lindsay it would've been so much better. Love her to death, and given how much Lindsay features in Kathy's standup, it would've had something funny built right in.
