Um, this is the same photographer and mag that published an editorial this past March mocking poor people of color and decided to place a black model on that cover (after no models of color being on the cover for almost 4 years) just for controversy. THAT was lowbrow, this is tasteful and a bit cheeky. Again, if it were Lara Stone no one would have anything to say. VP Oct 2010 much???.....

I should've seen this coming. First Wintour and now Meisel
There's no doubt she's gorgeous, but she's just not versatile as a model. From all the editorials and work I've seen of hers, there's nothing dynamic about her. Who ever mentioned it earlier in this thread about her looking like Anna Nicole Smith is spot on. Let's just hope the editorials will makeup for the drab cover.

Its a gimmick cover, simple as that. Shes "unconventional" in high fashion and Vogue Italia loves to stir that stale pot. She could possibly get a campaign from say Blumarine or DSquared out of it but I don't think she'll have a constant streak or join the ranks of "Sexy to High Fashion" models like Alessandra, Miranda or Candice who have balanced both.

I love it! Finally Kate nailed her first Vogue cover! I know that she's not really versatile but this girl is something... She already got a lot of major covers in this year and it's nice to see her on Vogue. The cover looks fantastic. Very 90s, very sexy and very Italian

It's really hard to say that Kate is not versatile as she hasn't produced THAT much work and when she had the theme set by the client is sexy, she isn't going to go against that and try and do something different for a relatively new model is she?

I don't think its derogatory to say someone LOOKS like a Hooker. But I do agree with the comments that Kate has the face of a Porn Star and she just manages to cheapen the cover. But we're all allowed our own opinion on the cover and i just think that someone else would have been better. Hell I think Rosie would have looked better on the cover and still High Fashion.

It is derogatory simply based on the context.

And in the space of a cover Meisel and Upton have brought back the Supermodel. Work.

I do really like the cover tbh! A bit too sexual for my taste or VI as it's own, but it's not that bad. I don't follow any Kate Upton's works so i can't comment about her. She looks great on the cover nevertheless

I can't believe how rude some of the comments about Kate's cover are. It's actually rather shameful that people think it's okay to refer to her as looking like a hooker or a porn star (amongst other colorful names). By using those words people are trying to shame Kate by equating her with women who do "lowly work." When really, women who are "hookers" and "porn stars" should be treated with respect, the way you'd respect anyone else. Because the truth is, that "hookers" and "porn stars" are complex people, just like everyone else. And so when I see people calling Kate these names I find it not only offensive towards her but also towards those who work in such professions. Anyways, I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of editorial VI shot with Kate. I hope it's great!

I really just don't see what is so special about this girl. They could have styled any model out there to look like that. Why her? She's so vanilla and this cover leaves me feeling cold. What in gods name is so special about Kate Upton?

It's degrading, rude and negative towards all women not just sex workers or models or whatever.

It's insinuating that if a woman chooses to show a little bit of cleavage and doesn't have bodily and facial feature marking some type of androgyny or masculinity then she is low and worthless. It's extremely narrow minded and on the edge of misogynistic.

so many people are posing the question, "what's so special about her? there are so many that are more beautiful or have better bodies or are more skilled poseurs, etc etc"

here is the answer:

THE INDEFINABLE "IT".

it's that "It" factor; that thing that you can't clearly isolate or place your finger on, but which is so pronounced that - for no other apparent reason - causes a person to stand out amongst others.

Kate Upton has "It". and she has it in spades.
