I'm not sure if I share the opinion of the majority...I think Joan looks good. Her face looks very bare/make-up less (but gorgeous)...there's more of a roll out of bed beauty to her and I think that's what most people are responding to as far as the 'expression' goes. If I can be very picky, I'd say I would like it more if they would have buttoned up the jacket all the way.

She looks tired in the cover but for me it's because of the makeup,like someone says on her thread they want to appeal the asian market!

I agree but yet this cover doesn't work for me, she looks odd with that forced fierce face and the styling is plain aweful.

in that case, joan is half latino though

I don't like the cover but i like joan. i just kind of wish the make up and style was more glamourish...i know she may come across a bit boyish but i hate styling/makeup/hair like this.

That's exactly what I thought, if she could just tilt her head up a little, and look a little more lively it'd be much better.

I don't think I've ever seen a thread about a cover or ad campaign with Joan where people didn't bring up the drag thing. I do agree that Joan has very masculine facial features and her posing doesn't help but I don't see anything "dragalicious" about this cover either. Doesn't mean it's a good cover, though. The colors are drab, styling is lazy, Joan looks drained. I pretty much dislike everything about this.

Everyone is complaining about everything on the cover, the styling, Joan's lack of make up etc without even payng attention to maybe what the story is behind it. She's wearing a trench with a naughty outfit beneath and her face has very minimal makeup. Perhaps there's a story there about her activities the night before, her waking up in the morning and leaving, putting on her trench to hide what she was up to. Do you ladies wake up with a face full of make up that is intact after getting involved with someone the night before? It's like fashion now has to be bold and direct for people to be imaginative and "get it." I quite like the cover...

^I like how you are thinking, but I don't really get much sense of a narrative on the cover. I think the most powerful thing about images is how they can provoke thought based on our own subjective experiences-but I think your analysis of the picture is entirely based on subjectivity. Not to mention, taking the target audience in to account with your analysis because this is for the target audience, the choices of hair and make up were perhaps most likely to appeal to Korean/asian beauty trends, not necessarily for creative purposes. All in all, I think she looks beautiful on the cover. I have always found Joan beautiful in print. I guess it's just how refreshing I find her beauty overall.

Re the drag comments: I think they are unnecessary, uncalled for and quite frankly, absurd. However, I am very interested and engaged in conversations regarding aesthetic beauty. I certainly think Joan looks just as feminine, if not more, as the greater majority of working and/or established models today-and that's not saying much, since there is a lot of androgyny in the fashion industry. I would not say her features are even masculine, just more developed and pronounced from what we typically see with fashion models.

^ i think her looking 'drag' is partly and mainly due to styling. although she may have a boyish walk, she has always come across feminine to me on the runway and this only sways sometimes when it comes to editorials. anyway it's part of her look and what makes joan smalls i guess. the cover is just not nice, but i am happy for her and just happy she is an ethnic model.

There's something about her face that is bugging me;

1. her cheekbone lines going into her lips I find ages her appearance.
2. Stop giving Joan clean sleek hair, mess it up a little! It would have been perfect for a cover like this.
