Here is the review from the-earl-grey.livejournal.com

W MAY 2007

edit #1: lara stone & shiela marquez by sorrenti. sorrenti can be inconsistent but he's great here. this is exactly the type of shoot he excels at: a sensuous shadow lit set piece with sexy looks, here its body suits. W deserves a lot of credit for its pushing the envelope nudity here, but as always its tasteful and totally succeeds within the terms of this shoot. lara stone is totally rocking she is basically already a top 10 girl of 2007 and lets see how much higher shell go by years end., shiela marquez also pleasant surprise here, she looks a lot like freja and thats a complement, with maybe a bit of lilliana dominguez thrown in. alex whites styling here as usual some of the best in the world. i cant get over how hot stone is here, elegant yet primordially sexy at the same time. every pic & look is great but especially these: lanvin shoes. herrera turtle. LV sweater. marc gloves, burberry sweater. marc sweater. cant say enough here about dappled atmospheric pics, bravura models & creative & involving styling. one of best edits Ive seen in 2007. RATING 9.5 of 10.
* by comparison bazaars recent doutzen swim edit, and i love doutz, was lame & fumbled in the photo dept. a doutz swim edit in hb should be exceptional; at best it was a tease or weak. sorrenti & the girls here show how its done.

edit #2: america ferrara by thompson. Ive yet to see ugly betty but reliable sources tell me its good. america seems like a decent celeb/actress. still not much too attract me here, even if it is the glam side of america. thompson can be great but when hes on celeb autopilot its as bad as an average mediocre vogue actress thing.
nothing for me here 3 of 10

edit #3: richard serra. good portrait by sorrenti. more great images from serra's repertoire, work from 1968-2006. he has a show coming to MOMA, should be some of best sculpture in nyc in 2007. I like his truly indistrial work, shapes, surfaces, thinking outside the box. serra might not be everyones cup of tea but i think the fine art fans know hes great. love the 60s images here. 7.5 of 10

edit #4 dutchess of devonshire's cottage in chatsworth. by simon upton. some cute interiors in polite english country style but also less than your usual W decor/landscape edit. ok. 6 of 10.

Autumn already? hot shots from fall shows: sasha at lanvin. vlada D&G. gemma jpg. stam ODR. also balenciaga. somewhat short look but well selected

Lets party: strong group of social/party pics this month incl mischa, lily d, lara, stam, daria, anouck, marina rust, doutzen, renee rockefeller, manda hearst, lydia hearts, and glenn close.

eat & drink: nice piece about London's annabel restaurant.

RETRO: love the flashback page & THIS MONTHS CATHERINE GRAHAM PIC FROM 1973 IS FAB.

ADS: trentini for D&G this girl is seriously rocking. the only model of 2006-7 that is in julia stegner world-ruling territory in my opinion, even better than sasha this year. LOVE HER!!!
* daria for prada parfums. daria doesnt work that much but her recent work has been of consistently high quality

VERDICT: first look at May W left me feeling it was oddly slim with only 1 fashion edit: the lara stone/shiela marquez body suits. but that alone was a stunniong story, sorrenti at his best with sensuous & haunting shadows. and 2 powerful 2007 girls + alex whites magic touch. america ferrara looked pretty good but the actress/cover angle is very wearing at this point. nice array of arty-continental pieces like richard serra, annabel's, dutchess of devonshire. the autumn show pics were pretty good & the party/social pics were strong. so its a little bit less than your typical W but the amazing sorrenti edit & the readable other stuff actually pulls this mag up a bit. I havent missed a W since it went large format monthly, was that 1990 or so? and like me Im sure you LOVE reading W every month, no exceptions. ONE SLIGHT THUMBS UP
Dissapointing to read there is only 1 ed
