W Magazine September 2008 : Kate Hudson by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott

If I'd never seen the cover we're comparing it to, I'd think this September W was impressive, but the problem with evocation of visuals from another era is that the strength of the original image may still be such as to overwhelm the 'update'.

There are plenty of new images every month that draw their inspiration from past work, with no problem, but in this case, the source material is so iconic, any comparison is going to overshadow the new work. And it's a comparison that you can't help making, especially for anyone the same as me, who can remember buying that Bazaar back in 1994, with the same fervour as we apply to seeing September magazines in 2008.

Considered on its own, I'd say this was the sort of W cover I'd love to see Mert & Marcus produce more often, preferably not with Kate Hudson, but if she has to be the muse this month because of a movie release date, then so be it.

Cool cover! Kate tends to be sometimes... boring, but this cover shows the opposite- Love the colors. Thanks for the pics

I really do love this cover. From all the Kate Hudson covers I've seen, this has to be my favorite. Can't wait to see what else is in this issue!

Hits: Profiles, profiles, profiles, but of lots of people you want to read about. First, there are niche, interesting names in fashion, from the designer behind Inhabit knits, to Erdem, a new fave of Keira Knightley's. A profile of outgoing Met Museum director Philippe de Montebello and his harsh judgment of the average museum goer that is sure to be controversial. Plus, a profile of Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. The one fashion shoot we loved by Mert + Marcus had Kate Moss playing Sheba in an Istanbul bathhouse. Steamy.

Misses: Not a fan of the Mert + Marcus "homage" to Helmut Newton. The model's no Nadja Auermann. Then it gets weirder with Tilda Swinton (apparently she likes her shoots arty). Ditto on the Mert + Marcus (again!) cover shoot of Kate Hudson playing against type - dead, that is - as a morgue subject. (Acting!)

tori spelling would be a better choice, at least surpring and hilarious
