The photos couldn’t have been sadder; this is absolutely melancholic, incredibly sad, but it’s a calm sadness. Resignation, there is a lot of resignation there. The colours and the girls are so dismal; the view and the landscape so gloomy. I really think somebody died, may be her mother…
Freja is her girlfriend, she’s holding Heidi’s suit strongly to transmit her a bit of her energy. She’s looking at her because she knows if she talked to Heidi she would have no answer. Heidi’s so sad that she can not say a word, she’s no voice, she’s broken of hurt, she’s so sad that she can not cry, she’s no strength, her eyes are fixed in nowhere...
Heidi has been at her mother grave, which is in that forest because she loved it, she loved going there. The only thing that warms Heidi’s cold heart is the sun which makes her suit getting hot, and Freja’s serenity presence (the only thing that bothers her nowadays).

I love the view, the landscape, the grass, the trees, the shadows, the sky, the light, the wind… I want to be there.

Claudia, you should have been there.
thank you for this interpretation....there's so much poetry here....

As others, i enjoy the insight of this post. I think how you are looking so deeply into this ad is very interesting and the approach of someone who is into fine art would. With this being a fashion campaign i can very much understand how others wouldn't see the same. I can see the melancholy and gloom you are referring to however as a fashion campaign, it's just depressing for me. The theatrics is great and inevitable, but it's lacking that fashion influence needed to sell the clothes. It is indeed moving, but by all means doesn't look like something from a fashion line, especially Chanel.

It definitely tells a story, but i think this story overpowers what they're trying to sell.

I would have to read a story to find interest in this ad - a book on 'how to create the perfect lawn' has more exciting pictures than this campaign does.

i think just the opposite. they're trying to show that chanel isn't one of these flighty "party girl" houses. it's serious fashion for serious time. this ad conveys that beautifully....

^^i think you can be serious without being dull. the sublime of the advertising is INTERESTING, the images themselves are NOT.

I really like this ad, it's beautiful and looks kind of vintage. It's good to finally see an ad that looks like a real photograph but in the best way possible.

I'm a bit disappointed to be honest. I loved last seasons campaign and I was really escited when I heard that Heidi was going to be in the new campaign again, but this doesn't look that good.

My only critique with some of Karl's ads is that you can't see a lot of the details of the clothes- which to me is usually the best feature...

I love the somber homoerotic nature here. usually when photogs go for that edge, they make the girls and styling very hard-edged, and slutty and naked etc. Usually, very 70s glam-ed up in a way.

I like the rural lesbianism presented here - like something forbidden and coarse. Freja: throw that girl into the barn, and do whatever you want to her! lol.

I still would have wanted to see some Parisian opulence.
