For the second season in a row, Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin's fashion snaps have been released little by little, culminating in a 'Manifesto,' a campaign booklet that circulates half-way through the international fashion weeks and contains the full, unpublished campaign. Last September, a team of well-dressed strangers descended on the four fashion capitals to hand out a 20-page booklet of images showing Gisele Bündchen running amok on the dark streets of Paris. This season, the Dutch photo team shot supermodel Kate Moss at the Fondation Pierre Bergé Yves Saint Laurent, slumped in the corners of the entryway and smashed up against the glass façade. Looking glamorously forlorn, Moss seems to be calling out for the return of the legendary Monsieur Saint Laurent, making the ads a touching tribute on the behalf of Pilati. Over one million Manifestos are set to be distributed over the next week in London, Milan, Tokyo, New York, and Paris, coinciding with a traveling public exhibition of life-size images from the campaign. V scooped these two exclusive and previously unseen images from the Manifesto, as well as a trailer video from the making of the shoot. Stay tuned to ysl.com for the unveiling of the complete behind-the-scenes film on Monday, February 25th.

susie bubble's got the manifesto...
she posted a few images on her blog.
and one we hadn't seen yet....

Quote:
‘A democratic approach to luxury’ is something of an oxymoronic phrase. Luxury, meaning something that requires the means aka money to buy isn’t something that everybody has in abundance. But brand awareness never hurt anyone and Yves Saint Laurent’s way of spreading the ‘word’ about the new season is a pretty unique one considering the status of the brand as one of the ‘old’ Paris fashion houses. For the second season, Stefano Pilati will be distributing a ‘Manifesto’ for their SS08 collection. It’s a 24 page booklet with a complete overview of the ad images of Kate Moss pressed up against the windows of the 'Fondation Pierre Bergé / Yves Saint Laurent' (which incidentally is one of my favourite campaigns of the season..... The word ‘Manifesto’ is an interesting choice. A ‘public declaration of principles and intentions’ that often has political attachments. Well a booklet of imagery beginning with a statement of ‘YSL *heart* you’ signed by Stefano Pilato is not the sort of manifesto as we know it a clever way of spreading the presence of Yves Saint Laurent. Of course the message isn’t ‘Come walk to Sloane Street and buy our bags and shoes’ but a non-intrusive way of inviting people to peruse YSL imagery at their leisure. In the same way that free papers handed out at tube stations are read with information retained for a short period of time (lost count of how many conversations in the morning have begun with 'Did you see in the Metro....?'), a million copies of this SS08 manifesto handed out with its high image content does mean that probably a million people (more more if it is passed around...) will remember Kate Moss' open mouthed expression against the glass of the YSL Foundation window wearing acrylic stars and low cut blazers. It's core message doesn't even seem to be about getting people to aspire to buy YSL. Leaving those fleeting images on a manifesto that might be used to rest coffee/tea cups on after a few days...

(It has crossed my mind to break into my old design technology hut at my old secondary school to fashion some sort of acrylic top....)

YSL Ambassadors (I will hunt one down and snap a pic if possible) will be handing out copies in London this weekend in Kensington, Notting Hill, Chelsea, Oxford Circus/Bond Street, Covent Garden, Piccadilly Circus and Shoreditch, Brick Lane. It is also being distributed in Milan this weekend and then Paris and New York on the 27th Feb, Tokyo on the 24th March and finally Hong Kong on the 19th April. Today and tomorrow, at the Dray Walk Gallery in Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, a video installation showing images from the Manifesto will also be shown. As with other high-end designer showcases in unexpected areas, the reaction from the 'general public' who may or may not know what the images are all about is often quite interesting to note.
A full video of the behind-the-scenes of the Manifesto will also be premiering on the website on the 25th February, with a teaser now availabe to watch on the site now. Now.... if they take it to the next level and start selling YSL at prices that are most-people-friendly, that would really be making luxury democratic...
