great thread. i have quite a library (3000+ books) at home so it's nice to see little touches (like magazines sideways on a shelf so they don't slump over) that improve ease of use.

sorry i'm a bit off topic here but what do you study?...do you have a wide range of books or are most of them specific to certain subjects?..

you should post pictures!.....

this thread is amazing

i have been trying to think of a creative way to display all the books i have. i tried stacking them according to color, but i really would like to have some sort of logical system.
..i am never getting rid of any of my books! even this one series i read in elementary through middle school that i was just obsessed with. the books were really hard to find, though, i had to order a lot off amazon and found them in tiny book shops. so, i will NEVER get rid of them, they took so long to collect!

well, this thread is very inspiring

^i recently finished my ph.d. and i write quite a bit of art criticism and art historical scholarship so it's nice to have resources around the house rather than schlepping to a university/public library.

art books take up tons of space, and moving is a bitch, but in effect my library is my first and greatest collection. though i do give away novels over the last few years cause i've run out of room (i hardly ever deaccession shoes, on the other hand!)

i'll try to post pics when I recharge my camera battery.

Aww I can't believe you got rid of your novels! I'm living away from my 'headquarters' library for the next few months and I am loathing the distance between myself and my Dickens, Austen, etc. No particular reason, really. It's just preferable to wake up next to Henry James. Pun intended.

And congratulations on the degree, good show!

I only organise my books in height order, but otherwise I like a mish-mash of colours and thicknesses and genres. Saying that, I only have a couple of hundred books of my own (I had to get rid of lots when I emigrated) but if I ever had a library I think I'd have to have more of a system.

I really think for Belle that's the turning point in the romance. He gives her the library and she starts thinking, "Well, maaaybe..." I'd probably give him a chance too, based on that collection.
