ah i see :p yeah it becomes something else.. a collage area when the whole work is mostly painting. i agree it looks mysterious with the dark colour, but also the cat looks a little melancholy

gasolinerainbow me too! i have one now but it is all digital with the exception of 3-4 bks. i'd love to grow a collection of Leo Lionni --so many styles in his work

what's the story behind the owl and the pussycat gius?

is it some sort of popular tale that i've somehow missed out on?

thanks for the pics... always nice to see a variation on a theme/idea/story and how different people interpret it with images...

just shows how words can send imaginations spinning in so many different directions

yes popular nursery rhyme :p nonsense poem by Edward Lear
the first pen drawing there is the original, by Edward himself
owl and pussycat are lovers

here is the poem...

IThe Owl and the pvssy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
'O lovely pvssy! O pvssy my love,
What a beautiful pvssy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful pvssy you are!'

IIPvssy said to the Owl, 'You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?'
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

III'Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?' Said the Piggy, 'I will.'
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.

I love the illustrations of Louise Fitzhugh. She is most famous for Harriet the Spy but my absolute favorite illustrations come from Suzuki Beane.
