I'm rather obsessed with fairy tale illustrations.
My favourite golden age illustrator is Kay Nielsen.
Also, Edmund Dulac, John R. Neill, John Tenniel, Sulamith Wulfing, Aubrey Beardsley, C. Walter Hodges, Emma Florence, Arthur Rackham, Errol Le Cain, John D. Batten and so many more.
Kay Nielsen - Twelve Dancing Princesses
Kay again, East of the Sun West of the Moon.
Kay Nielsen - Blue Mountain
oh, tinuviel, those are awesome!!!
thanks so much for posting!!! i'm not sure if i have seen his work, the imagery seems familiar but it's absolutely what i love, it's so poetic and strange....
You're very welcome! If Kay's work seems familiar it might be because he was very much influenced by Aubrey Beardsley. I find his illustrations very haunting somehow.
yes, tinuviel, i can see the beardsley connection but as luxmode i tend to believe i've seen them though...they are indeed wonderful.
luxmode, the one with the swan is my favourite...now this reminds me of a book i had again...i have to do some research.
some books i have lost over the years and as a child one doesn't remember the illustrator's name, so they are hard to find....
that's sweet, softgrey.
jennifer, i had one book illustrated by gorey that i so loved..."penny candy"...not as gothic as the rest of his work maybe but still special
