Nicole de Vesian - Her Artistic Garden Sanctuary

It was over fifteen years ago that I became aware of Nicole de Vesian. A woman who had lived and worked in Paris all her life until the death of her husband, when she decided to make the move South. She arrived in the Luberon in her seventies and proceeded to use her designer's eye (she worked for Hermes in Paris for many decades) in interpreting the aesthetic into a garden.

To this day the beauty and the originality of this garden stands alone. For me, it shows a modern take on topiary, removing the bourgeois historic formality and turning it into something altogether new and fresh and yet at the same time developing a style which has over time become a new iconic classic.

I never fail to be enchanted by this small terraced garden set on a Provencal hillside. Creativity is an endless source, whatever your age.

The background music is Sanctuary by Nitin Sawhney and moving images from the BBC Series Monty Don's French Gardens (Episode3: Artistic Gardens).
